Is it possible to rotate the camera in Sacred 1 Gold or only zoom in / out?

No, it isn't.
All of the backgrounds and landscape objects are pre-rendered bitmaps (you can see them pixelated at max zoom level). Only creatures, items and interactive elements are 3D.
