the game plays fine but crashes instantly when I try to save.

Running in compatibility for Win 95 and 98/ME doesn't help. "Disable visual themes" option is NOT available in Windows 8 for some reason
I had the same issue on windows 8.

The only thing I had done differently, after a fresh install, was to choose "Run this program as an administrator" under the Compatibility tab.

Try that out. It's been working fine for me!
