Oh man. I just had the coolest death I'm probably ever going to have in this game, and the death speech was icing on the cake!

I died in a Fairy Chest challenge, "no fighting". I was pretty low, and fireballs were all over the place. I was three hits from dead coming in. I got hit twice on the way up, and was a fraction of a second away from an unavoidable collision with the fireball that will now certainly kill me when I opened the chest. If the chest had gold in it, then I would have died before collecting any of it, but runes you get instantly just for opening the box!

Lady Blair II rejoiced at the shiny new rune, savoring the .25 seconds left of her lifetime.

Obituary:

Lady Blair II has been slain by a Planky

"Fairy chests hold all the runes in the game. Runes will help you immensely."

- Lady Blair II's Parting Words

I haven't played enough to know if this is a coincidence or really smart Easter egg programing, but most of my messages so far have been really generic advice up until now!
Pretty sure the messages are random, though I've had a couple of eerily serendipitous ones myself.
Here's my famous last words, this game is impossible for anyone over 45. It's just too goddamn hard.

Hmmmm. Having a controller helps a lot, I've found.

For bosses, grinding a bunch and then using lockdown and rolling up a nice class/spell combo helps a lot.

It's still hard, but it helps significantly to use every advantage available.

If you unlock and equip some Grace runes the game becomes easier the more of them you put on :D

I have a X-Box 360 controller, I guess I'm all thumbs :) Thanks for the encouragement. I haven't totally given up just yet.

You're right, I've managed to unlock a few pieces of gear and a few runes. I miss my old video game playing skills :p Thanks for talking me out of quiting a really great "indie" game.

I think the later gear doesn't drop as often. Boss rooms (marked with ?), like the giant skeletons or the enormous spinning painting of death, tend to almost always drop something unless all the gear of that area's tier is already acquired (I think). So you might clear an entire area and just not get any blueprints. But if you die in The Maya fighting a Sallos, it might be worth a lockdown just to get another shot at it.

I'm only 30, but I hope it works out for you at your advanced age. X-D

I'm 30sixsomethingthignorother and I find that I am having trouble in NG+ without at least one Grace rune because at NG+ the game starts becoming a bullet hell :/

Hmmm. I didn't have much trouble in NG+ (found it easier than NG proper actually), but I don't remember whether I used Grace or not. NG++ was unplayable until I took a single grace rune though!

My problem may be that I keep trying to kill everything in my path >.>

I just rushed it. Just needed a good Shinobi run to get to the area boss, then lockdown spam until I kill the boss. I did some grinding for blueprints, but iirc, most of my gear for NG+ was Guardian (tier 3).
After getting totally handled by the game, I got even. I downloaded a trainer for the game and pretty much finished the game. Now I feel a bit empty. I guess they need a "Geezer" mode for us old farts.

Moral to the story; Don't get mad, get even. -----John Belushi from the movie Animal House.

I always back up before doing anything like that just in case I feel dirty later. If you want to see the ending, you can always just YouTube it.

Difficulty modes would be nice though.
Famous Last Words: Bury me with my money. ;-)

Actually when using the default PC controls, if you press the space bar on the death page the 'last words' message changes. Even the characters who usually only have symbols (%#$&@#) can cycle through several new (coherent) messages. I don't know if you can do this with a controller.
