Is it possible to play over LAN or direct IP connect without the Galaxy client?

The game has direct connection (running the Steam version directly from the folder instead starting from the Steam client also enables this option) if you run it without Galaxy. We never tried online but works perfectly on local network at my friend using either the generic LAN address or the external IP.

To be honest this is why I want to buy this game. There isn't many games that support client-server connection with IP specification. Then we could play with the mentioned friend and his brother. :)

Do you guys know if this has some kind of random matchmaking function?

I guess not. However both Steam and Galaxy makes it easy to connect with random peoples even if you have to chat a little before. But since there is a lobby you have a chance seeing a server up and running randomly, so you can join it without further talking.
