I can't find any real info how digging for buried treasures works. The manual only states that you need a shovel and good eyes.
The walkthrough on GameBanshee mentions a buried chest on the island with the disgusting insects. I have a shovel and searched the island for quite some time, but nothing.
Anyway, do I have to use the shovel somehow? Do I get a hint text like for plants and ore veins?

It's been a while since I played the first game so my memory is a bit foggy. I thought that I stumbled upon a bunch of spots more or less by accident. From what I remember there are no special marks, just different looking patches of dirt on the ground; no button prompt either. You'll just have to try clicking whenever you think you're standing on such a spot.

I found a post on gamefaqs that seems to confirm my memory:

[i]You have to stand on a small patch (circle) of dirt, there are countless places to dig, they are noticeably different than the ground around them and they usually have a shovel sticking in the ground near them. Also if you're digging a grave (not all graves can be dug but some can) try to stand on the patch, WITHOUT having the gravestone highlighted then press the action button.

Thanks. I found that out, more or less by accident, after I posted my question.
