Hi !

I played Risen 1 for the 1st time back in aug-2014 then stopped.
Now I resumed playing it and I went directly to the Bandit's Swamp. I've completed many quests there to the point I am ready to face Brogar in the Arena. In-between some swamp quests, I went to Novice's Farm and completed two quests there, but I haven't got to Harbour Town yet

If I choose to defeat Brogar and then seeing The Don, will I automatically, irrevocably choose the "bandit path" ? In other words, can I see The Don and then go to Harbour Town trying to be a mage ?

I miss some fireballs spells and such, because... I tried to defeat those 2 skeletons that are near to Jan's House... they kicked my ass over and over again, until I gave up. Also: there is an ogre and 2 war crickets near the bandit's camp (near Rhobart's farm) which defeated me every time I tried to fight them. I'm just thinking I must come prepared with some spells to deal with those enemies.

To what point can we play the without being commited to a faction ? What quests determine the faction we choose ?

You're fine. You basically choose your faction in Harbor Town, so you can do all of the Don's quests, then go to the Harbor Town, then pick your faction. If you want to be a mage, just side with the Order in town and run out the Don's men.

Yeah, regardless of what you do in the Swamp Camp, your standing with the factions is decided more in the Harbor Town. It becomes obvious once you start completing certain quests in there.

If you want to get the most out of the game in one playthrough, go to the Bandit's camp in the swamp first and do all the quests until they let you enter the Don's house (find the 5 sword fragments, win against Brogar). After that the Don sends you to the Harbor town.

Before you do any quests in harbor town, decide whether you want to join the bandits, mages or inqusition later and fulfil the quests accordingly. If you intend to join the mages, you must complete Belschwur's quest (give healing potions to the people in the poor district of harbor town).
