I've just come through the cave and teleports to the castle. At that moment i'm unable to learn new combo (last one i have learned was on "Q" - swing and then kick). For new one "W" didn't work, "trust three time" as game says - neither.

Anyone run into that?

I had the same problem, but it was for the Q, I fixed the problem by binding the combo on a key (you can bind the combos in the options)

not really solved but it's a start

I Know this thread is old but I feel this is the best spot to put this.

In my game all buttons are left as default (except the save and load, I have those set to F11-F12, since it changes literally no already set buttons in the game and is totally safe) and it has A set to swing, S set to thrust, and D set to chop.

The Ninja Master/Dialogue box on the bottom left tells you to press THRUST (S) 3 times while walking.... when really it means swing (A).... 3 times when walking.... So... Yeah. Hope that helps someone in the future.
