did you manage to run Emperor's Challenge successfully? (I know its offtop and deserves standalone thread, but I cant create these on my current broser, for gog-only-knows reasons).

Since, as for the moment of writing, I cant use standalone installer of The Emperor's Challenge DLC on linux - after errors-free installation (doesnt matter if it was on top of vanilla game, or game+more to explore) of said dlc, game simply gets stuck on like 10% of loading forever, eating up 100% of one of CPU's cores and refusing to go any further

No problem at all, using the ./play.it scripts for installation.
One of the tweaks we use is running the following command prior to the launching the game, maybe it can help in your case too:
export LANG=C
If I remember well, it's used to work around some Unity3D/Mono bug with decimal separator using some non-US locales.

its not a unity game.

Anyway. Thanks, I've passed the installation. But now the said problem appears each time, game tries to load up saved settings (the /userdata/ folder from inside the game's installation directory). And the only way to go further is to delete all saves and start over. I didnt even begin to play tho - just switched settings to windowed+1376x768 and disabled depth of field. And no, using the said locale trick doesnt help a single bit

You’re right, I got mixed up because a similar issue happens with some versions of Unity3D.

There are some other things we do differently from standard GOG installation:
* We drop the shipped libSDL2-2.0.so.0 library and use the system-provided one instead.
* The whole game data is installed read-only, except the following files/directories that are fully user-writable:
*.ini *.txt savedata userdata

used this, didnt affect anything.

Some further investigations: game saves should be fine. The only file that cause game to stuck is settings.ini inside '~/gamefolder/game/userdata/Renowned Explorers International Society/userdata/settings.ini' - by default its 0 bytes long, but if you alter anything in game's settings - some data appear inside, which, for some reasons, cant be acessed by game correctly (maybe it happens coz default savefolder has spaces in its path?)

Strange, my version of the game does not try to write anything into "userdata".
Do you have a directory named "savedata" next to "userdata", and is your user allowed to write in it?
