Just wondering what has been done to get Red Faction 1+2 running on modern Windows.

I only ever got Red Faction 1 to run on my Vista x64 machine by using the unofficial Pure Faction patch. Does the GOG version come with Pure Faction pre-applied then?

As for Red Faction 2, I never played it so never had to find out what to do to get it running.

Can anyone tell me what has been done to get them running in the GOG releases then? I'm very much considering getting them.

Did Red Faction 1 support Glide back in the day? Maybe nGlide is being used?

I'm wondering the same thing. I was under the impression that Red Faction 2 (and apparently 1) don't run on modern Windows. (Which is annoying given a properly coded game that's much older will run on modern Windows...)

I sort of wanted to play Red Faction 2 back in the day, and for $4 will give it a shot, IF it actually runs.

I'd assume it does if they're selling it like this and without a warning, but...
I was wondering the same. I have the disks for both RF1 and 2 and could not get them to run on newer OS. I bought them from GoG just because I know they got them working on new machines. I won't be able to test the installs until later today.

I played a little bit of the gog versions, so far no problems under win 8.1. They seem to be pre patched with unnoficial patches.
I bought time ago this games on STEAM, but usually some old games on STEAM work so bad compare to the GOG.com ones, example Commandos Series.

I still not tried the Red Faction 1 and 2 on STEAM, you know if they have some issues? I am considering buy RF1 and RF2, again... here...

Well since they launched their Money back guarantee there should be no need for a "but..."

From GOG support page:
" If a game that you've bought on GOG.com doesn't work and our team of expert Support staff can't solve the problem for you, we will give you back your money."

Both of them worked absolutely fine on windows 7 as far as I can remember.

I think Steam explicitly says Red Faction 2 WON'T run on modern Windows. (All right, I admit I sometimes buy cheap steam stuff :-O )

Indeed. From the Steam store page for Red Faction 2:

Notice: Direct X 10.1 ATI video cards or Direct X 10.0 Nvidia video cards are not supported.

Now if RF2 does use 3DFX, then they could quite feasibly be using nglide to emulate the graphics thereby bypassing this issue. I would like to know how GOG have got them running before I buy, though. Think I might send in a question to GOG support, but time will be running out for the sale price.
Windows 8.1 with a nVidia 660M here,
I've just tried both games for a few minutes, and everything works fine! The first one may already contain the Pure Faction mod indeed. As to the second one, the logos appearing at start may flicker if you have an Optimus system like me (I'm using the nVidia card to play), but the in-game cutscenes seem to be rendered with the engine and work fine anyway. So, here's a another positive answer, they may very well work with an nVidia with the latest driver and 8.1!

Ok, so then here we go with GOG.com version -_-

I am so "easy"
From my experience with the GOG release, RF1 doesn't come with the Pure Faction mod installed by default; neither does it use nGlide.

Has anyone tried RF1 with the Pure Faction mod installed on Windows 7 64-bit? How well does the game run?

Awesome, thanks! (And I've got an Optimus system too, although thankfully mine lets me disable it if I want.)
