I did the setup for Red Faction, but if I try to start the game afterwards it freezes, I have to stop the RedFaction.exe via the Task Manager.
The Launcher window is still visible, but I don't get into the actual game.

I've tried different settings inside the setup to no avail.

I have XP SP3 with a GeForce 9600 (DX 9) and an Intel Quad, so since this is a rather old machine I expected it to work without problems.

Any iideas or has someone had the same issue?

EDIT:

I've tried with Linux/WINE and the game seems to work there (went through the tutorial). Not the first time this happens to me, got "Incoming" from GOG, does not run properly with Windows, but with Linux...

Can you take a look inside the folder where you've installed the game and list what executables are present? I've not yet got the game from GOG so I'm not sure if they've bundled the unofficial Pure Faction patch with it. If you can take a look then maybe running that will fix it.
thx for your help uhm all i can find are those:

RED --(level editor)

redfaction launcher --(freezes after klicking start...the computer runs normal but you hear it working while the startmenue turns white and nothing else happens, except a no response when opening the task manager)

RF---nearly the same as when u start the launcher with one difference: the whole folder seems to crash and u get a no response of the exe and the red faction folder when closing with the taskmanager

uninst000---guess it does what the name tells me ^^

update launcher---failure message: this program was executed outside the launcher the launcher has not been updated.....when i start it while the launcher is open, the same freezing like when i start the launcher alone

Hmm, no Pure Faction in there then. Back when I played via retail disc (last year I think it was, might have been year before) I had to use the unofficial Pure Faction patch to get it to run and that was on a Vista x64 machine.

Here is the website for Pure Faction. Download the latest version (3.0) and install it. Then run the game using it. It has its own launcher and game executables - PFLauncher.exe and PF.exe respectively.

:(

I can only find references to black screen happening on launching Red Faction 2 and that was a memory issue. The game saw too much memory and didn't like it. The fix was a patched RF2.exe that allowed for large memory addressing, I think. But regardless, that shouldn't be an issue as it is a technique GOG would use for releasing games on modern OSes.

Until more users have tried playing, I can only suggest contacting GOG support. But please, let us know how you get on and if I find anything else out I'll let you know.
update: tried the game on my gfs computer and it worked without any problems.....

she has a win-7 computer....are there any known problems with win xp?

You could always try re-installing it with administrator permissions. That is if you hadn't already done so. The strange bit is that you can't even get the launcher to run, meaning that you can't get the settings changed to try them out. It does sound like something else is going on.

Someone mentioned somewhere that there is a RedFaction.exe file too, in addition to the RF.exe and the RFLauncher.exe. Does the RedFaction.exe also result in the crash?
Pure Faction method works flawlessly on my WinXP /w integrated Mobile Intel graphics poop, thanks much korell! +1

PS. Providing simple installation instructions just for the heck of it:

1. Download Pure Faction 3.0 & install it into Red Faction's game folder
2. Delete or rename RedFaction.exe
3. Make another copy of PFLauncher.exe & rename it to RedFaction.exe
4. Play the game (works even from the desktop shortcut provided from GoG instalation)

Same here, game wouldn't start. Interestingly I'm running XP, so it's not about the OS, but probably the hardware. I have a GTX660.

Pure Faction helped, but can only start in windowed. Fullscreen crashes :/ Edit never mind, stretched mode works.

Why doesn't gog include the fix for RF I, or at least host it? I thought that's what gog is about?!
AFAIK on steam the first game got a compatability update last year.
Sounds like an issue for WinXP players.
I agree with RosenCruz...a lot of times when I read people having issues with games it involves WinXP SP3. I wonder if there's something in XP, or the SP3, that is messing with the games?

Regarding this case - why should a game released in 2001 not work under XP (the GOG version is stated as compatible with it), but with newer Windows versions and even under Linux with WINE, as in my case? I find this rather odd.
