I recently downloaded Red Baron and Red Baron 3D and I noticed for Red Baron 3D there were several mods and glide wrappers available to improve the game. I also noticed that one in particular had a couple of GOG-Red Baron forum denizens working on it: Red Baron 3-Redux.

If I install the Red Baron-Redux does that have a glide wrapper in it? Does it assume the presence of a glide wrapper for the redux since it contains graphic improvements? Is downloading a glide wrapper as easy as choosing the right file and putting it in the Red Baron directory? I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card and am running Windows 7 through bootcamp so it seems from previous discussions I should get the DGVoodoo 1.4 glide wrapper. I have another computer with an ATI Radeon X1600, so I should get a OpenGlide Wrapper for that. I assume that once I download the glide wrapper and Redux, that I should change my setspeed settings?

I actually have a couple of irksome graphics problems: the main screen and some of the after action screens sometimes take on a weird psychedelic color scheme that makes them hard to read. I saw a couple of others with similar issues, but not a solution ... maybe the Redux download/glide wrapper will help once I download them?

For the advanced flight model in Red Baron Redux does it only replace the "authentic" model? or will I no longer be able to fly on novice/intermediate? (I don't mind if it also makes novice and intermediate harder, just as long as I have a gradation to get used to it). I also saw there were issues with online play since the original servers are no longer up, there seem to be several fixes for them ... does Red Baron Redux contain those fixes? I see that there is going to be a second patch on the Redux website dealing specifically with multiplayer issues.

I apologize for the multitudinous questions, major props to those who answer my newbie questions!

This question / problem has been solved by Wailwulfimage
Well for the Psychedelic colors in single play this works for me running win7
Right click on desktop, click Screen Resolution, now leave this window OPEN or minimize it, start game should be fine.

For Glide wrapper I use dgVoodoo 1.50 beta2 works great with my Nvidia GT 9800 win7 or ATI 850 pro Xp. CJ has a preconfigured glide wrapper you can just drop in your Red Baron folder over at Redbaron3dofficialsite.com in the forum section.

If you try Redux do a new install, it does not contain graphic improvements or glide wrapper in 1.6 gold.

Salute!

Wailwulf has some really good info below :)

Glide Wrappers:

They can be finicky. One Glide Wrapper that works great on one of my machines is horrible on another. DGVoodoo that is suppose to work great with nVidia cards, fail miserably on my nVidia XP macgine, but OpenGL that is suppose to work best on ATI cards works very good on the same XP machine. Most players seem to swear by DGVoodoo 1.5, but for me it scrambles the image (Win 7) or gives bad FPS (Win XP), however DGVoodoo 1.4 works flawlessly for me on my Win7

I have four Glide Wrappers posted here:

http://cid-e196374a237958b4.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Public/GlideWrappers

OpenGlide_008_Max256MB is the one I use on my XP machine with a nvidia GeForce card. This wrapper was modified by GabiLaser so that it can use all of the card's resources with out Graphic corruption. It tricks the game into thinking there is only 4 megs available instead of up to 256 on the graphics card. Read the readme and configure the ini to your monitor.

dgVoodoo1.50Beta2 Is the Glide Wrapper most seem to like and works best for. For me a a few others, it has problems. For me personally, on Win 7 64 bit the graphics get seriously jumbled like a Picasso cubic painting, and on my Win XP machine could never get better then 5 FPS. But as I said, most that I know like this one the best.

DGVOODOO1.4.zip This is the one that works best on my Win7 machine. Great graphics and good FPS. But on my WinXP machine, it only gives me 5 FPS like 1.5

CJGlideWrapper Is created by a friend of mine, gives me great FPS on my Win7 machine, but graphics are not as good as the DGVoodoo1.4 I use. On my XP, it works better then DGVoodoo, but not as well in FPS or graphics as the OpenGL does.

Best thing to do is just keep trying one until it works. Just make sure to clear out all the files that came with a wrapper before adding a new one.

There are some nice starters for RB3D, all created by GabiLaser.

The first two can be found at Gabi's Filefront site: http://www.filefront.com/sharedfiles.php?sort=file_size&dir=desc&user=GabiLaser

RB3D_ReLoad_1.166.zip Ithis is a fabulous Single Player utility that allows for you to have many things in the game. The greatest I feel is the addition of a steady wind so you can be blown across the lines in a dogfight. It also allows for engine damage, engine management, a bullet counter, TRACK-IR, and for some mods, the ability to fly two-seaters.

RB3D_TViewMP_1.3.zip Is for the use of Track-IR. Onece in the cockpit. press the insert key to activate and deactivate it.

This last one Gabi does not have uploaded, so i ahve it uploaded here:
http://cid-e196374a237958b4.office.live.com/self.aspx/RBFILES/GabiLaserRB3dStarters/RB3D%5E_RedBulletMMP.rar

RB3D_RedBulletMMP.rar Is a bullet counter for MP. Press alt+f and you will be shown how many bullets you have left.

As to the graphical psychedelia/corruption of the menus, the fix is to close down explorer.exe. However just going into Task manger and doing so closes down your computer. The thing to do is to make a batch file that closes down explorer so you can play the game, and then let's you restart explorer when you are done. You can also instead use it to start one of the RB3D game starters. I also use this batch file to start Diablo 1 and Starcraft 1 on my Win7 machine.

To create the batch file, open up Notepad and paste in the following:

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
start /w Baron.exe
pause
start explorer.exe

Then save into the RB3D game folder as a bat file, not a txt. EX: save as RB3D_SP.bat , not RB3d_SP.txt
For MP, change "Baron.exe" in the text to "Baronmmp.exe" If using one of the starters, use the program's name instead, like "Reload.exe"

ReDux at the moment just effects the flight and damage models. It is designed for MP and I am not sure if it would work with SP. I am on the Redux team and we are working on what we hope will be a vast improvement to the game. All I can say is we are pushing the limits as far as we can go and after the next release we have plans to push it even farther.

RB3D can exist in many installs, I probably have about 20 separate installs right now. Just make a new folder and copy and paste the contents into it. This is how I deal with mods and such.

When it comes to flight model mods for SP, you need to always have the game set to authentic and the AI pilots to full intelligence. If you don't, the AI pilots will not be able to fly the planes, instead whole squadrons will crash trying to take off.

Now you asked alot of questions, so I hope you can absorb all the answers I have given you, but there is one more thing that you did not ask but need answering if you plan on flying in multiplayer.

One, GOG modified the barronmmp.exe so the game will not ask for the CD. Pronlem is most servers that folk fly in has security which sees the moddified exe as a hack. (it fails the checksum). If you want to fly MP without getting booted from secure servers, you need a non-moddified baronmmp.exe

I have one uploaded here:
http://cid-e196374a237958b4.office.live.com/self.aspx/RBFILES/Baronmmpexe.rar
It is the stock baronmmp.exe patched to 1078. It will tell you the CD is missing and ask for the CD. This can be circumvented by clicking on the upper right cross six times to start the game.

The other aspect of MP is the need to find the game servers. In the game folder is a file called mplayer.ini Open it up. Under [KNOWNSERVERS] delete all of the servers listed. Most have not been up for years. GOG scoured the internet and included them without checking. Then under [METASERVERS}, delete all the servers under it and instead add:

[MetaServers]
Server=TCP:216.18.240.30:6001 ; Redux
Server=TCP:rlgb.xs4all.nl:6001 ;Rens
Server=TCP:66.225.104.67:6001 ; Tiger

These servers are set up by RB3D folk, they are not game servers themselves, but instead show game servers that are up.

You can also change you messages for the chat hotkeys. To chat in game, press Backspace, type message of hotkey, then press Enter/Return to send.

Hope this all helps and does not overwhelm.

And d*mn you Stan for answering while I was writing this! :) Cool trick for the menu corruption in RB3D, but did not work for Diablo 1

Wailwulf, Stanski thanks guys! That was a lot of really useful info ... especially from Wailwulf. I'll probably be referencing that post for awhile! Stanski, thanks for the neat trick! I gave Wailwulf the solution post for the sheer volume of information, but I marked both your posts as helpful.

I'll definitely check out those single player utilities. I remember playing the dynamic campaign from Red Baron 1 as a kid and absolutely loving it, so I'm looking forward to doing the same in Red Baron 1 and now Red Baron 3D. Those additions sound great - the steady wind is a nice add on.

I actually did a couple of Fly Now missions with Random AI settings and watched a enemy plane dig up the dirt without me even getting close to him. So I can see why setting the AI to hardest would be advisable.

I'll try the multiple copies and glide wrappers out. I'm also going to see if I can get Red Baron 3D working in WINE on Mac OS X. I've seen some do it for Linux with even 3D and mods working. So I'm hopeful.

Who knows? ... maybe once I get practiced enough, I'll start looking at the multiplayer modes and patches and you'll see me in the skies of Red Baron 3D with you guys. :) Best of luck with future versions of Red Baron Redux - I'll probably check that site out more often - join the forums there if/when I start looking at multiplayer - to see what you've concocted.

Again, to both of you, thanks!

You are welcome.

Some how I have become a Red Baron expert without trying. I still feel like I know nothing about this game. :)

I suppose one could say it's all relative.
