Maybe I'm blind, but I can't find where you can change the language in Recettear to Japanese.

Gamecard says audio and text of the game is Japanese. And apparently you can play the Steam version completely in Japanese by changing the language settings in the Steam client.

In Galaxy the configuration page has the option to select language grayed out, but it mentions "English & 1 More (In Game)", so there should be way to change the language to Japanese in the game.

Recettear's config program only let's me change video settings and controller options and in-game the settings don't allow for a language change either.

So, if anybody could tell me how to change the game to Japanese, I'd be very grateful!

GOG just updated the gamecard : unfortunately, japanese is available only for audio (you can see the details of the update here).

Thanks for bringing this unfortunate update to my attention!

So, GOG is too lazy to somehow make the Japanese version work or what? The game is cheaper when on sale on Steam and it does have the option to play with Japanese text! Maybe I'm the only one who would actually play the game in Japanese, but still...

I agree that it's sad. May be japanese text was potentially causing issues ? They're increasing the number of translated games, so may be it's simply a matter of time. Have you asked them in a support ticket ?

For higher price, honestly, here games are without DRM, they try to do their best to have working games, there is a support service, there is a 30 days refund policy, "fair" prices... It's often a little more expensive, but for me it's worth it. But sometimes like here yes, there are some little frustating sides :P (higher price with less languages ? Hum...) But there are like I said some better sides in the same time.

I've got a message from support, offering a refund in store credit and telling me that the game has no Japanese text, both in their (GOG) and Steam version of the game. Which is plain wrong. The Steam version runs fine in Japanese and I've just replied with screenshots of the Recettear demo from Steam, to prove this :-)

I hope GOG just mixed something up and is able to add Japanese to their version too, because I really prefer to own the game DRM-free here. I'm willing to pay more for DRM-free and good support and I have more than 500 games in my library to prove it, but I really wanted to play this game in Japanese...

I have the Steam version and it too doesn't have the Japanese text, just the voice. I launched the Configuration tool and there was no language option, I checked the Options menu in the game and there was no option to change the language in there either.

The only other way you might get Japanese text would be to change your system locale to Japanese as some games are made to look at the user's system language rather then allowing the user to change it to their liking.

To change the Steam version to Japanese, right-click on the game in your library and select "Properties". Then select the "Languages" tab and change the language to Japanese. Close the window and Steam will download additional data (at least for demo, maybe it's already included in the full game). Then you can play the game in Japanese.

The only problem is, that the configuration tool doesn't display text correctly if you are running it in a non-Japanese version of Windows (since the text in the tool is encoded in Shift-JIS and not Unicode), but the game itself works fine (apart from garbled window title). See attached screenshot.

EDIT: Got a another reply from support and they are contacting the developer and try to get Japanese added :-)

I understand you well ;)
(even if I must say that I'm not personally interested)

is there anything happening with this? Did GOG get in contact with the developers? I recently bought Recettear and was disapointed to find out that i don't have the ability play the japanese version because i bought it from here rather than steam.
I'd like to know this as well. I don't want to buy again the game on steam only because gog version doesn't have full japanese support :/

Last I've heard was that GOG was contacting the publisher. That was almost a year ago.

Support also wrote, that "as far as I remember, you are the only person that ever wrote to us about that". I would recommend contacting support and asking about the lack of Japanese. The more people complain, the higher the chances they try to contact the publisher again and actually bring Japanese language support to GOG!

I see, thanks for your advice. I'm really cynical about this but, trying doesn't hurt :) .
