I really would like to play these games, but the music is very important for me (if I like it) so I will play something else instead of RoA 1 and 2.
Perhaps I will start with number 3 as it doesn't seem to be very related story wise and maybe the music is of cd quality in this release?
They story might not be that related, but yo will miss the oportunity to import your characters over from the first part to the third. Which is the most fun.
RoA 1 and 2 are definitely the high points of the series, if you only play one, I wouldn't play 3.
I can only recommend playing them in the correct order.

And the soundtrack of the games is just brilliant. RoA 3 has imho the best of the three. Check them out, you won't be disappointed!
Thanks for the tips. I will play all of them as they seem just like my type of games.
My problem was actually that the music seem to be very good, which shouldn't be a problem!

But for the international versions of the game no cd music seem to have been released. Only for the german originals from what I've read. At least for RoA1 and RoA2 and most likely RoA3 too.
The midi music have been described as inferior to the redbook audio.

Thus I will have to bite the dust and play them with the midi music. I've read that the cd music is actually the same midis as those that come with the game only recorded with a very good synthesizer. This is the case with Warcraft II also.
As I most certainly will not use the crappy midi sounds of the Realtek audio card on my laptop I will have to do some research on how to use soundfonts in dosbox and hopefully finding a soundfont that resembles some of those good old soundcards.
Well, I hope I can ad a little sugar to your Dust. Your comment about the CD Audio being only a beefed up midi ringed a bell, so I checked the best (unfortunately German) site about RoA and voila:

"Es empfiehlt sich, nicht die CD-Musik zu benutzen, sondern die MIDI-Versionen, welche qualitativ fast gleichwertig sind. So vermeidet man CD-Wechseln im Verlauf des Spiels[...]."

rough translation:

"It is not recommended to use the CD Soundtrack, but the MIDI-Version, which is just about the same quality. You avoid switching CDs [there were two, ed] during gameplay[...]".

What makes those Cd versions so special is the fact, that you could put them in your CD-player to listen to the soundtrack (yes, it is THAT good). A big thing back in '94.
