I bought this for my son to run on his "games only" Windows XP system, after reading about it on a "top shareware games of all time" article. The XP system has 2GB RAM, 256 MB directx 9 video, and 2.5 GHz dual core Intel cpu. It would seem to meet all the requirements.

The install seems to go ok, and it also installs .net 2.0 ok. However, every time I try to actually play the game on there, I get the message "Error: this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling may fix this problem..."

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, then also downloaded everything again from gog.com. It makes no difference - can't run it on the XP system.

I was able to install and run just fine on my primary Windows 7 system, but the point was for my kids to be able to play the game on the XP system so that I could have a little peace and quiet on my main PC, and be able to write and do things online while they are playing on the other PC. The game is useless to me if it instead becomes another reason for my kids to compete with me for time on my primary PC.

I even tried downloading the separate .exe that one fellow offered, which supposedly would launch the game without needing .net 2.0. I copied it into the game folder on the XP system, replacing the original .exe file, but it seemed to make no difference. The game still did not load.

I don't see any fixes for this problem on here, and I can't be the only person who has run into this!

What is the policy for getting a refund, since it won't work on XP as advertised? This is my first (and probably only) time trying to use anything from gog.com.

Quite late, but send a message to Support. The game will certainly work on some XP systems (GOG tests all their games), but it may be you need to tweak some things to get the game to run under your system specifically.
I am going to take a stab and say 256 MB of video ram may be a bare minimum to run xp you may want to look at throwing in an older (cheaper) 1 Gig card.
