I have found zero enjoyment in the past for racing games which are supremely realistic, but love the idea of driving around. I loved BLUR quite a lot, though I understand it is extremely arcade-like. Anyone care to share the reasons for which they enjoy this game? They may help persuade me :D

Also, how easy is it to get into and make progress? Is there a progress system of sorts? Anything anyone can tell me about helps!
I don't think Grid is the game for you, you might want to get Burnout Paradise or NFS Hot Pursuit (2010), Grid is no hardcore sim but it is still rather hard, FlatOut is a bit the same in this respect but I'm also a bit biased because I race all games in the hardest modes which means sim handling and no driving aids, it's possible with everything turned on it might be arcade enough.
I know I enjoyed this game mostly to crash around and watch the physics. It helped it was my brother's game and I didn't feel compelled to do any career stuff. Also, it was fun to exercise my 8500's muscles with it.
You can unlock all the cars with cheat codes, if you don't want to earn them in career mode.

(Unlocking 'all events' and various cheat modes, on the other hand, involves either finishing the Grid World Mode or, erm, paying a fee to Codemasters for a copy-specific unlock code. They even advertise it on the back of the manual: 'Want easy access to the best bits of the game? Call now and get instant access to...' I'm not sure whether their hotline still exists, since http://www.codemasters.com/bonuscodes seems to be down.)
I find the range of variables and styles of racing in this game excellent. I play using an xbox360 controller without driving aids (except for automatic gearbox) which means slamming the pedals gives you extreme results which requires a lot of finesse. If you drive with all the driving aids turned on it turns the game into a solid pure arcade racer where all you have to do decide how fast to go without having to worry about the wheels spinning or locking up because you are stepping on the gas and brake pedals.

The AI is quite friendly and will for the most part avoid you, even if it means they have to pick a poor lane to avoid you, the psychotic player. I say they act like this for the most part, because sometimes they do nudge you in tight bends which can be very frustrating. Even worse, in almost every race there is an accident of some kind, some of them occuring naturally but other times they seem a little bit forced and scripted. Too many times I've been screwed over because the cars in front of me suddenly blow a tire or spins out blocking my path.

The game has a nice range of different styles of racing as I said earlier. The proper race tracks are quite easy and I'd say they are great for casual racers. The street races on the other hand can be brutal with narrow sections and tight turns. The AI is especially prone to crashing out on these races clogging up the track. Another "problem" with the street races is that they are visually very busy. Lots of clutter, lots of varying light levels and often claustrophobic feeling sections. Compare this to actual race tracks that are very open and perfectly sunlit with clear contrast between track, grass and sand traps.

There is also a demolition race mode that may seem casual but it is actually very difficult because of how the car handles and because of how aggressive or uncaring the AI is in this game mode.

Finally, I would like to add that this game is about the thrill of intense racing. It is not a game for car enthusiasts or people looking for full simulation as the crash physics in particular are not very convincing, there is no car tuning and there are no practice or qualifying heats before race day. At the same time, it is not a game made just to look and sound good, it is quite a challange to win races if you go above normal difficulty. If you just want to get into a fast car and have a 3-5 minute long race, this game is very accessible and you can switch from straight up video game racing to semi-simulation as you like. I find this to be one of the more open and relaxed racing games I have ever played. The progression is very wide as you have three different regions to race in with a good mix of different types of racing in each. You are never forced to go through some boring stuff just to get to the exact kind of race you want.

What Sufyan said. I would add that there are five Difficulty levels and although they don't affect your car's handling or speed, they do adjust the AI's speed. I've been playing GRID (single player) since 2008 and the most difficult level is still too much for me to have any expectation of winning. But five levels gives the player ample opportunity to fit in where he's comfortable, and then to up the ante as he becomes familiar with the tracks and cars. Practice pays big dividends.

I play with a keyboard. Don't pass up GRID just because you don't have the latest wheel, controller, whatever.

Good post. Burnout Paradise sounds more like a game tailored for you. Solid open world arcade racing with lots of blur. There is always a great sense of speed. The only negative is that events are the same and throughout the course of the game you might have to do some 4-5 times. They are not all available at once so you can pick and choose as you progress through your licences.

GRiD has 1 demolition derby track. That's closest to casual racing it gets.
It looks beautiful though.

Get FlatOut 2, it's just plain fun and has a few car mods.
