In the VGA remake, of QFG2, some of the monsters have unique themes. My personal favorite is the Scorpion theme. Also, in the VGA remake, one poison cure pill lasts forever, as long as you don't get stung. In the EGA game, the pill wears off on its own pretty quickly. Also, it's easier to dodge in the remake, and the monster doesn't move its tail is quickly in the remake so you have more time to dodge the sting.

Things like this make me wonder how anybody can prefer the EGA game. I'm guessing it's because of nostalgia. In any event, the VGA game deserves more love than it gets.
It's difficult to explain but I think the limitations of the EGA engine make the visuals more appealing with what they managed to do (especially with the WIT initiation area)

I think the poison cure pill is still eternal in the EGA version? I've never noticed it wearing off.

The scorpion is a lot easier in the EGA version because you can just spam the "down" attack (9 on the numpad, I believe) and it'll just take damage quickly until it dies. In the VGA version, it likes to block your attacks, grab your wrist, and counterattack often.

People like what they like (and dislike what they don't). I personally prefer the original version, because it's a product of Sierra and The Coles, still holds up on its own quite well, and isn't tainted by fans trying to make it "theirs". This isn't to say that QFG2VGA is bad ... in fact it's probably the best fan effort ever done.

I also can go back and play games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, and Megaman on the NES and still get immense enjoyment out of each, despite each having numerous remakes and rereleases on multiple, newer platforms. It may have a little to do with nostalgia, but mostly has to do with "developing this game must have been an amazing undertaking given this hardware". A game needn't have more than 16 colors and some minor tweaks to be considered superior.

It wore off quite quickly in aulddragon's LP. Right before one of his scorpion battles, he took a pill. Then during the battle (just a few seconds after he took it) the game gave a message saying the pill wore off. And then the scorpion grabbed him once and killed him.

Seeing that was what inspired this thread actually. I hadn't noticed it before then.

No arguments there. As far as I know, AGD Interactive are the kings of fan games.

I have *NEVER* seen a message saying the poison cure pill could wear off. Because I always take one immediately after buying it at the shop, just in case I get stung by a Scorpion later.

Can you link me to the part where it happens?

He took the pill at 3:50. 4:15 is where you see the message that it wore off.

BTW, this guy's Let's Plays are great. He actually knows how to be funny without tainting my experience of the game. If you are interested in watching Quest For Glory Let's Plays, aulddragon's are by far the best ones that I am aware of.

I'll be sure to check him out, but I know what happened in that clip. I even tested it, just now, to make sure.

The antidote wore off because he failed to dodge the Scorpion's stinger in time. It plays that message and there's like a frame of the Scorpion's tail lashing out. He couldn't see that frame because he had the speed up too high.
Hmm, that's interesting. In the VGA version, the scorpion would have picked him up and stung him, but he'd still be alive. The scorpion would have to pick him up and sting him a 2nd time for him to be dead. In that video, I noticed the stinger wagging even if he didn't, but since the scorpion didn't pick him up, I had assumed he dodged it in time. I guess the 2 versions of the game have different ways of letting you know that you didn't dodge in time. If that's the case, then I have to say that I personally think the VGA version did a better job of making it clear.

Well, like I said, you can see the scorpion's stinger lashing out if your game isn't at top speed, and it does display a message that your antidote has worn off, so I'd actually argue that the EGA version is the one doing a better job of making things clear - and it even pauses the action to let you catch your breath and prepare your strategy, too :)
Like Zachski said, cure pills only wear off when a Scorpion stabs you with its tail, and it'll wiggle its tail prior to that.
