I've run in to a weird graphical bug in QfG 5: the screen will darken while I'm walking around the map, but Silmaria, combat screens, etc. are always in broad daylight. Also, when I go underwater, a sort of rippling effect will continually cross the screen.

The game loads fine, and I haven't noticed any other problems. I've experimented with the settings, but nothing seems to help. I'm running the game on my laptop, with Windows 7 and an Intel card.

Any suggestions?

I'm having a similar problem as well..
Running on Windows 8 with Intel HD Graphics Series.. Most of the game runs smoothly but there are a few problems.

Things that are not working properly
- Screen not dark during night hours when in town or combat (but is on world map)
- Underwater has a rippling line going from right to left and being underwater crashes game fairly easily
- Stamina doesn't drain while swimming, so swimming skill does not go up no matter how long character swims
- When I watch fights in arena, the characters just dance and circle endlessly without ever attacking
- Possibly other things as well (I'm only on Day 3)

I have tried minimizing all settings as well as running in several different compatibility modes (as admin) but nothing changes these problems so far..
Anyone fix this one yet?
Apologies for the gravedig. Same issues. I noticed the failing day/night cycle, but that one's easy to ignore. The underwater distortion is not... I'm attaching a 'shot. And the perma-crashes make it downright gamebreaking. Any non-obvious ideas?

I don't have any ideas for fixes, but I will say that you don't have to go underwater. There is only one time in the entire game you will ever have to go underwater. You will know when that time comes. There isn't even any point in grinding your swimming stat. As long as you can swim, that is good enough for QFG5. The only reason to grind it would be to get a head start for QFG6, but it's very unlikely that there will ever be a QFG6.

I don't think it ever really does get dark at night. As long as other things change the way they're supposed to change, you're fine there. What's supposed to happen at night is some businesses close down, other businesses open early in the evening but then close at midnight, the music changes, and you fight the night monsters. If all of those things happen, then the game is working fine.

I have no answer at all for the arena thing.

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, I'm right at that point where I do have to go underwater. That's why I called it gamebreaking... I don't even make it past the first screen without CTD.

I would love to know if you ever fixed the water issue. I am still having the same problem.

I'm afraid not. I worked around it by saving a lot and finishing up underwater as fast as possible. But a very similar issue happens in the endgame boss fight, and there's no way to work around it this time, making it impossible to finish the game
It's some kind of compatibility, emulation, or interpreter problem. It's also possible that the game's scripts have been altered in some way via a patch. The behavior is very similar to problems I've seen in 1-4 while playing on ScummVM.

Unfortunately, I've only beaten QFG5 a couple of times and I'm not very familiar with its engine. :(

Yup, got to the end of the game and witnessed the split screen issue. Couldn't see or fight the boss. Gave up, unfortunately.
Sorry to necro this thread but has anyone found a solution to this? I tried some basic stuff such as changing setting in nvidia control panel, reducing frame rate, changing vsync settings etc. Nothing seems to help.

the most obvious problems are:
* going underwater results in some graphical artefacts running across the screen and very frequent crashing
* no visible night/day cycle in town
* when fighting in the arena NPCs dont attack at all

I've found an answer to this problem before, but now I am having trouble finding it again. I never had problems with QFG 5 until the gog version and only recently it started having these problems of not getting dark at night, etc. When I first noticed it a couple of years ago I was able to find a fix to this, but now I can't find it again. If I am able to find it, I will let you know.
I have no idea if this will help with these particular issues, but you could try the fanpatch.
