Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone had this problem and might have encountered a solution.

Basically I start the game, resolution changes and the game "minimizes" (no black screen or anything).
After that the process is shown as not responding, and I can kill it through the task manager.

Tried various compatibility modes, UAC disabled, the 1.2 patch for x64 windows OS, tried to install also that Win2K&XP Patch but it keeps giving the message that I don't have version 1.2 of the game, even though the patch was installed.

Did also try to disable windows defender, it doesn't help.

No idea what could be going on.

If you're curious about my system:

OS: Windows 8.1 x64
CPU: Intel i7-3820QM
RAM: 16GB DDR3
2 HDs: 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD
Video: GeForce GTX680M

Cheers !

PS: Starting to consider installing a VM :P

PS2: Works on the VM, therefor, can confirm that it's not a download/installation issue.

I didn't run into any problems on Windows 8 so far, the game launches and runs without any hiccups. However, what you describe is very similar to the problem I had on XP, the source of which was the fact that the MOV files couldn't be played and made the game crash.

Unfortunately, I don't remember now what I had to do to solve the problem (I believe voodoo and necromancy were involved at some point), but you might want to look into that aspect of the game. As far as I remember, it's a known issue, and there are many topics on the web discussing this.
Cool, thanks for the info, I'll take a look around and let you know :)

//EDIT:

hmm.. tried installing quicktime 3 to 7, but the only version that works in my computer is the last one, tried the safe mode of quicktime, still won't work, I think is some kind of association between the game and quicktime, as if the game couldn't find the player for the video file.

//EDIT2:

Could not make it work, regardless of my efforts, gonna try to get the QG5 original CD Copy and run it by the installer that the guy that makes sierrahelp page made.

If it works (i'll let you guys know) Maybe it would be nice for GOG to actually let us download the original files and not the only their installer..

//EDIT3: Nope.. that didn't help either ><

I'm sorry it's not working for you, I wish I could help more. :/ The only additional input I can give is that having the original files wouldn't help if the MOV files are indeed the problem: the issue I mentioned above was with my original CD version, while the GOG digital version worked like a charm. Perhaps instead of turning off the UAC, try to Run as Admin? Also, did you make sure to install the game into a folder that has write authorization? That also may be the issue, although I don't remember whether QfG5 creates/modifies any files on launch. Still, that might be the problem - I couldn't get Divine Divinity to launch properly until I fixed the write permissions for its installation folder, for example.

I miss Windows XP, I really do. It was a simpler time, I feel. ^^;
It's ok, no worries, tried that as well :P

Got an answer from the mod @ sierrahelp, he said:

"You do not seem to be missing any files, nor am seeing anything else wrong. he compatibility mode setting you have gave me a clue. Apparently, Win8 does not allow the 16-bit color mode the game uses. If that compatibility mode setting does not work for you, you will probably need to find another solution. You could try using DxWnd to run the game in a window as a work around."

I'll give it a shot when I get home from work, and see what happens.
