So, I'm once again replaying all Quest for Glory games, and wanted to play QFG2 AGD remade version. I've had no issues with the game - ever. I played it on the same computer, same system. But now I've got a weird problem. The graphics seem to be force-interpolated or something. The only way to get rid of it is to force windowed mode (which is not satisfactory to me unfortunately). Also the game seems to be slowing down badly. I've never encountered this earlier on, what might be the issue? Any help would be much appreciated.

Some of your issues may be resolved the quickest by downloading ScummVM (https://www.scummvm.org/) and playing it using their engine. There is one bug regarding playing a Wizard if you want to play the Optional game with Keapon Laffin. If you win that game, ScummVM can crash. This game is completely optional as a Wizard though, and doesn't award you any extra points, as it's a game that AGD added.

If you want to play it without any bugs, you may need to do a little more work.

Regarding graphics, I believe that you can resolve that using the graphics configuration option.

Regarding speed, you may be able to resolve it by executing the executable via Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Another option is to update the executable. The QFG2 AGD remake was made over a decade ago. Since then, the engine that they used to make this version, Adventure Game Studio, has been updated many times over, and has less bugs with modern operating systems. You can update the executable by going to Adventure Game Studio (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/) and downloading, then installing their latest version.

Then you can grab the "acwin.exe" file from there. Copy it into your QFG2 directory, and use that executable to run the game.

If you want to setup graphics options, you'll need to go to the Command prompt and run "acwin --setup" to do graphics configuration with that executable.

Thanks for your reply. The issue is, I've played the game on this system and did not alter any config options...

Ok So I got the pixelated graphics to work, however I'm having problems with the game speed. The thing is the game speed does not change regardless of messing around with the speed slider in the game menu. I mean, something is gettiing very wrong with the game.

You may have played the game on your system and did not alter any config options, but it's possible that your OS or an anti-virus software on your system was updated, or patched, or a driver was patched on your system, which now uses resources that the game's executable uses, but the previous version of your operating system did not use those resources.

I remember once the game slowing down because I had changed monitors, which deactivated one graphics card driver on my computer (I have two graphics cards on my computer).

Point being, is that even though your system may not have changed, there may be a bunch of other things that changed on your same system that changed between the last time you played the game and today.

Sometimes it's easier to try to fix these kinds of things by using an updated version of acwin.exe instead of trying to figure out what may have possibly changed on your system, particularly if you're under the impression that nothing has changed other than the speed slider not working.

No deal, I downloaded the latest AGD and copied the acwin file, then renamed it to qfg2 executable, and it shows an error

BTW I too own two graphics cards but I already made sure that these settings were not changed.

This works like a charm as of today (16-Jun-24):

1. Install Adventure Game Studio (As of writing, on version 3.6.1)
2. Navigate to the installation directory
(should be 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Adventure Game Studio 3.6.1')
3. Copy 'acwin.exe' AND 'SDL2.dll'
4. Paste into the installation location of QFG2 VGA (should be 'C:\Program Files (x86)\AGD Interactive\Quest for Glory II')
5. Run 'acwin.exe' from the QFG2VGA location
6. Enjoy QFG2VGA at blazing fast modern PC speeds!

(OPTIONAL: In the QFG2 VGA directory, rename 'Qfg2vga.exe' to 'Qfg2vga(backup).exe', then in the same directory, rename 'acwin.exe' to 'Qfg2vga.exe'. This will permanently fix the problem on your installation, and you can run the game normally, such as from the launcher)
