If QFG5 crashes to the desktop as soon as you try to increase a stat with the up arrow during character selection, the following should fix the bug :

- Delete or rename the folder C:\GOG Games\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 5\DATA\Gqm

TY very much! :) I had this same problem and your advice worked!

Funny. I did not have a "Ggm" folder, mine was named "Qgm", but I deleted that and no more crashes on char creation screen. Have only started playing, so I don't know how the rest of the game will run for me.

Oh well, only one way to find out. :)

This worked for me too!

I removed the folder to another location in case I needed it later. In fact, I might try to put it back in after character creation, see if it only makes it crash at the character creation screen. Since I have no idea what's in the folder at the moment, it's best to keep it just in case. Well I'll experiement with that if I come to any more crashes or oddities.

Still a problem, still working solution.
I did some investigation using the available community mod tools and it seems like this mysterious QGM folder was an attempt to fix typos and odd grammar (and in one instance of flavour text, retcon a locale) but the QGM files in question seem to be broken, causing crashes in more places than just character import. While they export fine, the game hard crashes whenever it tries to load one of GOG's patched strings. For reference, I ran a compare in Notepad++ to see all the differences.

We could not import the character from that file. Make sure you are using a "character save" (about 100-300 bytes), not a saved game (over 40,000 bytes) from Quest for Glory 1-4.

EDIT 2: Loading the improved models for both Devon and Elsa on that site prove that it's the QGM files provided with the GOG install that are the problem; GOG didn't break anything when they No-CD patched the game and made it run better on modern OSes - Devon and Elsa both look pretty good with the new models: about on par with the original PS1 Final Fantasy VIII, in fact. Either the community tools repack them badly and blow up the game like Erasmus when he loses, or someone messed something up.

EDIT: The forum automatically deleted multiple spaces. Know that the orignal 997.QGM had two spaces after Jon Bock.

It seems to me we really need some sort of Enhanced Edition Mod or general fanpatch for QfG5...

The fanpatch already exists. An Enhanced Edition on the other hand would need to be built from the ground up. Not that that hasn't happened before, but it's usually for more popular games like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, or X-Com UFO Defence/Terror from the Deep.
