As I'm sure many of you have also done, I waited too long to talk to the Domovoi and was quite dismayed to find out that I no longer could. Since I had already done all of the other quests I could in the game I didn't feel like starting over, so instead I set out to find a way to hack the doll into my inventory so I could go on with the game.

I won't bore you will all of the details of how I did it, and instead I'll just tell you the end result so that you can do it to.

The only side effect I could find of doing it this way is that the innkeeper still thinks his daughter is gone even after you've saved her. Otherwise everything else works great, and I even got a 1000 score in the game!

So without further ado...

Install and start up a program called CheatEngine.

Start the game and load up the save you want to run
Click the upper left button that says :"open a process" and select DosBox. (Or whatever you're using to run the game).

Do this is the following order:
1. Change value type to 8 bytes.
2. Select "hex" and put in the code: 3440000080 (MAKE SURE HEX IS SELECTED OR IT'LL SEARCH FOR THE WRONG THING!)
3. Uncheck "Fast Scan" (This is really important, and you need to be really really careful, because cheatengine really really wants to check it and will constanly recheck it for you. So be vigilant!)
4. Hit "First Scan"
Hopefully only one value you should come up.
5. Right click on it and Select "Browse This Memory Region"

6. The top 3 lines should match the attached image. Change the values in the redbox to the values that I have in there.

All done! You should now have the doll you need in the inventory.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Note: If for some reason more than one result comes up, just browse this memory region on each of them until you find one that looks like the attached image.

Very useful!

However, I had a thought - after you save the Dry Domovoi (Which you can do without talking to the Inn Domovoi), what happens if you enter the main hall at midnight, enter your room, and then re-enter the main hall and try to open the cabinet?

Also, I can confirm that the "Innkeeper thinks his daughter is still gone" thing is probably an inherent part of the game - that is, it'll eventually cycle *past* the "Yay the daughter's back!" events and go back to the standard events, which also includes him being cold to you and might believe his daughter's gone.

From my experience, it isn't the second visit beyond midnight that triggers the doll to be retrievable in the main hall. It is the second attempt at dialog with the Domovoi. I demonstrate this in my speedruns; I talk to the Domovoi, hit escape to cancel the dialog, and immediately talk to him again. Even though the doll dialog never appears, I then take the doll...

... and immediately, after writing this, I remember my old route in speedruns, and I believe it was the second visit. This may be an odd example of either/or in QFG. :/ I've changed routes so frequently as I've learned faster tricks I've forgotten old ones. That might be worth a look.

I tried it the way you did it, actually, and I couldn't take the doll. It wasn't until I went back to my room and re-entered that I could take the doll.

On the other hand, on your route, you also *paid* for your room at midnight, so it may have counted as visiting the main hall at midnight once, even though it had the innkeeper and all of the villagers there.

I'm not sure. I had already done all of that before I tried to talk to the Domovoi, so I could't really do anything to trigger the scene.

Worst case scenerio is you'd probably just get two dolls. Although more likely, it'll see it in your inventory and assume you'd already gotten it.
Sorry, allow me to clarify - I meant as a substitute for hacking the doll into your inventory.
The first time I played, I had the Domovoi appear in my room on day 14 and day 15. Do I have the only version of the game in existence where the Domovoi CAN appear after day 10?

Personally I'm not sure what exactly causes the Domovoi to stop appearing.

Out of habit, I just never allow the domovoi a chance to *not* appear.
I routinely beat the game in 11 days now that I know what I'm doing, and I think I've read he stops appearing after day 10, so it's never been a problem for me. I would guess the Coles knew the game was beatable in 11 days so they didn't bother to have the Domovoi appear after day 10, and you can be done with the Domovoi way before day 10 so I guess they figured they had given you plenty of time. The problem is, staying up until midnight in your room and then going into the main part of the inn isn't exactly an obvious thing to do. The first time I played, I did that once out of curiosity, since I had learned that in games like this it is a good idea to go everywhere at every time possible to see if things change. I guess I'm glad I did. I do not remember what night exactly I met the Domovoi the first time I played, but I know it was after Igor disappeared. It very well could have been my last night to see him. For all I know, if I had waited one night longer, maybe then I would never have met him and then never known I was stuck until I resorted to the internet. It could be that if you don't FIRST meet him by a certain night, then he'll never appear. Maybe he stops appearing in the dining room after a certain night. But if you've met him at least once in the dining room, then you don't have to worry because I am certain (from my memories of my first playthrough) that the Domovoi can and does appear in your room well after the point he supposedly disappears forever. He'll appear in your room if you have't done certain things after a few nights. I'm pretty sure I didn't get the doll until day 14 or so, after he appeard in my room and told me about it and gave me permission. He can also appear in your room if you haven't completely rescued Tanya by a certain point.
From what I understand, Domovoi disappearing is a bug, and it happens around the time "someone else" appears.

The only problem is, I don't know WHO the someone else is.

I'm guessing what might be happening is that the new actor is overwriting the old actor, but if that was the case I would think that would be an easy fix for someone with the source code to make - and the Domovoi bug was present in the Floppy version, right?

I know the game pretty well. Davy arrives on Day 5. Punny arrives on Day 3. I don't have the foggiest as to who that could be referring to either.
Erasmus and Fenrus? They don't appear VISUALLY until the end of the game, but they can appear audibly before that. You can hear them in your sleep on some nights, starting on night 9 I think.
But they're not actual actors, though, so at no point would they override the domovoi.
The sierrahelp website says that the Domovoi bug begins on day 5, meaning day 5 is the last day you can speak to him. I guess that would mean Davy is the "someone else." But I am certain this contradicts my experience playing the game the first time, so I don't know how accurate this is:

Thanks, I had a related bug where the Domovoi conversation in the inn would never progress (though he did talk to me in my bed once too) so I couldn't ask him for the doll and this fixed it!

You're a lifesaver, I was twenty days in or so, and had done every possible other thing and there was no way I was replaying this.
