so I bought the gog quest for glory 1, beat it and saved my hero when it told me to at the end.

I downloaded the fan VGA remake for quest for glory 2 and when I select "import hero" it tells me no file is found

I'm not computer savy so how do I make this work because i'd rather not play the ega version
You have to go into the QFG1 folder, grab the .sav file you made, and put it in the QFG2 folder.

i went to my cloud saves, copied the newest file there and pasted it into the QFG2 folder but when i go to import hero it still says no file found. where specifically would the save file be?

This save file with the exported hero from QFG1 is not like the others. It's the one you get when the game asks you at the end if you want to save your character, and it will have a ".sav" extension (it won't work if you just rename a normal save to have the ".sav" extension).

This character file should be in the QFG2 remake's folder, so that step is correct.

If you're using ScummVM to play the original QFG1 from where you export your character or the QFG2 remake, then there's a few extra things to consider with this process. I am assuming however that you're not.

Also, have a look at this older thread about similar issues:

alright i figured it out. i deleted almost all of my save files and then this time the .sav file appeared
