Panatheran: If this helps anyone: I just tried to import into QFG2 with some old exports. My export was named THIEF.SAV, had to rename to theif.sav (no capital letters) before it would let me import.
Thanks very much. I tried a couple of the other suggestions with no luck, but this worked for me. The.SAV was automatically created in all capitals and even though I copied it across to the QFG2 folder, it was not recognised. As soon as I changed the name to all lower case it was recongised and appeared in the import dialogue box.
I have tried all the suggestions and none of them have worked for me. They all appear in the directory but whenever I try to import my character it tells me it's not a QFG file. I have now played all the characters and none of them will import. Ridiculous! This was one of the reasons I purchased the game was to be able to import to the next game.

Shaics: They all appear in the directory but whenever I try to import my character it tells me it's not a QFG file.
Grab the file here and see if those characters can be imported. Shadows.sav should be importable in QfG5 only, GLORY3.SAV should be importable in QfG4 and QfG5, GLORY2.SAV importable in 3 onwards and GLORY1.sav should be importable in all games.

If those characters can't be imported either, then a bit more info will be needed, or even better, a copy of your characters.
And you are sure that you exported them and are not using a saved game, right?
I'm running Boxer on a Mac and when I get to the point where I can save my export, it says the file has been saved but then asks me whether I want to try to save/export the file again. When I look through all of the folders in the GOG>QFG Pack folder, none of them has the .sav file, nor can I find it by searching for glory1.sav, or any iteration of the save name.

Any ideas?

Q: Where can I find my Boxer (DOS) game's save files?
To access your saved games, go to Applications -> Terminal
In Terminal, paste, or type in, the following line and press Enter (Return):
open ~/"Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States"
Find your game's folder. The package containing your save files is located inside.

I just installed the Quest for Glory pack and finished a play through on the first game. After going through this forum and trying the various solutions to import my character for the next game I came up with nothing. I can't even find the save file the game is supposed to create when you use c:\glory1.sav. Not even a full computer search yields any results. I'm using Windows 7 and the game is run in DOSBox 0.74. Any ideas and help would be appreciated. It would be nice to be able to play through the series with the character I started it with as originally intended.

Edit: Never mind. I'm an idiot and missed a step in one of the solutions. Went back and was double checking the forum and found what I missed. Thanks anyway.

MacOSX user and I'm running all the games in Crossover. How do you save and locate your save for import into the next quest for glory game?

You can use https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/mactutorial/programfiles to get to the contents of a bottle where the actual .exe program and its files are located.

You're a Ninja dude!! Thanks for the help and the headache saved Weaver1!!!
Does any know if Using GOG Galaxy complicates this matter further, because I've tried changing the A: to a C: and it doesn't seem to create it anymore this use to work back in the days when I was running these of CDs in my own manual version of Dos Box but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

Thanks guys
I recently played thorugh the first three using Galaxy and had no problems exporting and importing the character.

I just deleted the "a:" and the .sav was created in the game's directory. My games are installed on G:\<NameOfGame>.

Instead of downloading anything, you can make a .txt document with the name ending in .sav, and move it to the Quest for Glory II directory.
Edit: Nevermind, you don't need to make a txt doc.

CAMIR0503: In the end I gave up, uninstalled everything and reinstalled it on C:\ with the default path. That way I could retrieve the file. Obviously these instructions only work when installing it the default path on Win 7.

JMich: I did try to make this FAQ as broad as possible, especially after the nth post about importing. As to why your file wasn't in the game's directory, I've truly no idea. Glad to see you got it working after all, and hope the rest of the games don't give you the same headaches.

Blooglspash: I don't know if characters created in ScummVM can be imported into the original interpreter, though, I'd need to do a bit of testing first.

JMich: Nice to see someone who can help with ScummVM, assuming you find the time, try to import a character, and I will update the FAQ as needed. And where exactly is the file saved? ScummVM\Saved Games or something else?
ScummVM saves characters into the saved game directory. This path can be set freely, it's under "Options" / "Paths" / "Save Path". ScummVM will also automatically show you characters exported from QfG1 in QfG2 in case QfG1 was played using ScummVM too. You don't have to move anything around manually.

ScummVM also fixes a Quest For Glory 3 bug, when exporting a character. In case you played too long, some values will overflow, which will then result in a broken character file. This shouldn't happen at all in ScummVM. Although I'm not sure if this patch made it into the 1.7.0 release. It's definitely in the daily builds.

Another bug was also fixed. QfG3 never imported the character type (Fighter, Thief, etc.) properly from QfG1 character files.

Oh and ScummVM should be fully compatible with character files from the original interpreters. Export + Import should both work without issues. Earlier ScummVM versions compressed those files, but the latest versions don't do that anymore, so you get plain character files, that you can use with the original games as well.

So you could actually play EGA or VGA original QfG1, then play QfG2 fan-remake using that character, then use that character for QfG3 using ScummVM again and finally export that character once more and play the original QfG4 using Dos-Box (QfG4 is not yet supported in ScummVM).

A quick note for those using the new GOG Galaxy client. I finally found my QG1 exported file (after saving as c:glory1.sav) under:

C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\Games\Quest for Glory (VGA)

Copied it into the location where I'd installed QG2 and hey presto. I first wasted half an hour because I didn't realise I had two different installations of Quest for Glory 2 and I'd copied glory1.sav into the old one... so it's worth checking your shortcuts to make sure you're putting it in the right place!

Hope this helps somebody.
Ok, how do you use that Sierra Patch to fix the QFG2 import changing class to Fighter? The Readme instructions say to use the patch on the "installation" disk and then install as normal. But we don't have an installation disk here, GOG just unpacks the fully installed game!
