Export and Import FAQ for Quest for Glory Pack on GOG.com
After a lot of threads asking about this, here is an attempt at answering all (or most) of the questions about this.
1. How do I export my character?
At the very end of the game, after the ending sequence, you will get a prompt allowing you to export your character. This is not done through the "Save Game" dialog, but a different one. (images requested) Once there, you will have to enter a directory and name for you file, with default being something like "a:\glory1.sav". Since the default configuration doesn't have an a: drive mounted, save it as "c:\glory1.sav".
2. I saved it as c:\glory1.sav but now I cannot find the file on my C: drive
By default, DosBox mounts the game's directory as the c:\ drive, so if you exported your character from the first game as "c:\glory1.sav" the file will be located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 1\glory1.sav". Copy the file to the directory of the game you want to import the character, for example "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 2", select "import character" from the start screen, and navigate to the c:\ folder to select the correct file (eg glory1.sav)
3. I am using Windows Vista/7 with UAC turned on, and my exports aren't found in the game's directory
Any time a non-elevated account tries to save to a UAC controlled folder (like Program Files), the file is instead stored in the VirtualStore folder of that user. The location of that folder is at "C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Quest for Glory Pack\", with the AppData folder being a hidden folder, "Users" and "Program Files (x86)" may be localized in your language, and <username> being your Windows User's name. You can also use the %localappdata% alias in the location bar of Windows Explorer that will take you to the AppData\Local folder directly.
So, after you find the VirtualStore directory that contains your file, copy it to the directory the game you want to import is installed at, meaning the "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 2" directory, not the one located in VirtualStore.
4. I am using ScummVM to play the games, and I can't locate the exports at neither of the 2 above mentioned folders
I don't have that much experience with ScummVM so I'd like some confirmation or clarification for the following.
By default, ScummVM is mounting its own directory as "C:\", so if you export the character as "C:\glory1.sav" the file will be located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\ScummVM" or "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Program Files (x86)\ScummVM", depending on whether UAC is off or on. If the file is at the first location, then you should be able to import it without problems, if it's at the second one, copy it to either the game's directory or to ScummVM.
Verification of the above is needed
5. Can I export/import correctly from the remakes?
The remake of Quest for Glory 1 handles exporting correctly.
For the remake of Quest for Glory 2, while it should handle importing and exporting correctly, there has been at least one report of it not being able to import.
Update: If the remake claims that your file "is not a proper QFG1 Save", open that file with WinRAR or equivalent and extract the file contained within, adding to it the .sav extension. The file should then be recognizes. Thank to jimmi.s.hansen for this.
6. When importing a character to Quest for Glory 2, his class is set as fighter
Original post by Baggins
You can fix this problem with this patch (it is the official Sierra patch for this very issue);
Also remember, later games in the series give you the option of 'changing your class' if something went wrong.
