I've been trying to import my Quest For Glory 1 character to Quest For Glory 2 and it keeps giving me an error that says "That doesn't seem to be a proper Quest for Glory 1 Character Save file"

Help!

First of all, are you trying to import to the original Quest for Glory 2 or the remake? The original shouldn't have any troubles importing, but the remake will probably require you to extract the glory1.sav file first. To do that, just open the file with winrar (or 7zip, or equivalent) and extract the file you find in it.
Second, you are trying to import an export file and not a saved game, since saves are not valid files. Attached is the "Export" screen from QfG1 EGA version, so if that is the version you played, you will be able to verify that you exported it correctly.
Third option, if both of these cases fail, is either for me (or someone else) to upload a character for you so you can verify that importing works, or for you to upload your file somewhere to see why it fails.

I played the VGA version of QFG1, finished it and made a .sav file at the end. I'm trying to import it into the old original EGA version of QFG2 that I also bought from GOG here. It's refusing it. However I managed to dig out an old floppy from 1994 that also had a character export on it and THAT worked. So I don't know what's going on. I'd really like my import to work (not the 1994 one) I don't understand why it's not working.

I'm playing this on a Windows 7 - 64 bit machine, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

PS. I was not aware that the .sav file was a compressed file... How odd.

Windows 7 shouldn't matter, I played GOG's version of the original QfG1 and exported without problems. Only thing to watch out for on Win7 is the UAC, but if you've installed to a location other than Program Files, it shouldn't matter.
Only other possibility I can think is that it's a save and not an export, so take a look here for a screenshot of the export screen. If you truly exported from there, only thing I can think of is to upload your files (saves and/or export) somewhere so we can either try importing, or loading your game and exporting a new file.
Alternatively, I could either upload you a file of my own, but it will take me a day (or two) to make a character for you.
Hopefully, you'll get it working soon :)
Thanks JMich, I'll try and send you my .sav file. I can definitely tell you it's an import though. I've played this game through about 5 times when I was a kid and exported every time. This is the first time I've had a problem.

Anyways, when I get home and I'll send you my .sav file.

I wonder if the save games work the same for both EGA and VGA versions? If it does, I can try and export from the EGA version of the game instead. I can't figure out why it's causing so much trouble. The export file QGlory1.sav I have is only 1kb, but I don't imagine they were ever very big anyways.

Got my .sav file here but... how do I send it to you?

3 possibilities
1) rename it to .jpg and upload it as a picture
2) use a filehoster (rapidshare, mediafire, dropbox, skydrive or any other you like) and post a link
3) I can pm you an email address and you can mail it to me.

I'll be offline for a bit, will take a look at it as soon as I'm back, and reply to you.
Doh. I should've thought of that. Ok, here it is. Just rename it properly. Thanks Jmich!
Oh... this is interesting. I opened the file in notepad and this is what the BAD file looks like;

Wizard
5250487d d721669 d69161669 d7272 d69693318273220313c2c3d19 7 6 5 4 4 47d7b5912515974 4

So I opened the GOOD file that works in note pad to compare it and this is what it looks like;

Lews Therin
535265493a75591a7a386e617878786d6d7676 e6d4d4248444e4e40464d4d4d4d4d4d34324540 3 b2656

They look quite similar. There are more spaces in between digits in the bad file...

Anyways, thought that was interesting.

Took a look, and indeed the file doesn't load, at least not on QfG2 EGA. Didn't try the VGA version yet, and don't (currently) have the time to try and debug the structure of the export :(
Best thing I can suggest atm is to grab a character creator from here and create a character for importing, or wait for me to start seeing which characters control what in the export.
Sorry I can't be of more help atm, will try to find out why this happened.
LOL No worries. That's where I got my QFG1 character actually. I've played it 5 times so I didn't really feel like a cheater for playing him with an uber char. And since I know this game by heart, I finished it in less than 2 hours. LOL The sequels are MUCH more involved than this one was.

Oh well. Thanks for trying to help. Wish I could figure out WHY it rejects my import. The files look almost the same, maybe if I remove a few spaces....

Maybe it's the uber stats that make the file invalid. Why don't you create another character with stats no higher than 100 in everything and then import that one? You can then hack the file to raise your stats to what you want.

I just did that, though I did actually play through QFG1 to get my character to import. After I imported him, I used HexEdit to beef up his stats in the QFG2 remake so I wouldn't have to spend so much time hacking, slashing, and skulking.

I'm like you. I've played this through legitimately so many times that I don't feel the slightest bit guilty about "cheating". I'm also trying an experiment - I want to see if I can steal everything in sight (my character is a thief) and then hack the honor points back up to see if Rakeesh will make me a Paladin at the end of QFG2.
