My system:
i7-4790
8GB RAM
8GB Swap
Nvidia gtx 1060 6GB
Running on ArchLinux

The game starts fast and with a reasonable memory footprint, but when loading a saved game, Quern fills up all of my 8GB of RAM. I never played a game that uses so much ram... Anyway, beside the long very loading time, it's playable and fast. The major problem now, is that I can't continue playing because when I'm moving to a new location (after solving the central tower puzzle) it starts loading again, this time filling even the swap space... But it won't finish that, because at a certain point, with 8GB of RAM full and 5GB of swap full, the whole system hangs...

Maybe there's a memory leak... maybe some other kind of bug. I don't think that I need >16GB of RAM to play this game, since the minimum required is 3GB and the recommended 8GB.

Does anyone know a fix or are aware of some patch?

Hey! I am not sure about the memory leak, I passed the link of this discussion to our programmer, I hope he can check it / do something about it.

The loadscreen issue has an easy, but not too elegant fix. The problem is caused by the way we handle loading games: loading always happens with the current scene running in the background - this means that if you load from the main menu the menu will be running in the background and if you load from the first part of the game, it will still be running while loading.

This can fill up memory/video memory and all kind of space, which is not optimal.

The easiest client-side workaround is loading a Part2 savegame from the main menu, so the system doesn't have to store both parts while loading.

Here is a savefile from right after the loadscreen: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B2FA4zFH_oPWdWJ2dnZDcUxib2c

You can find your savefiles at: ~/.config/unity3d/Zadbox Entertainment/Quern

Let me know if it worked!
If you were to encounter any more issues please don't hesitate to contact us here or directly (as you did :))

ps: I decided to answer it here instead of the email so more people can see the quick solution.

Thanks for you answer. Today I managed to proceed after minimizing the memory requirement and optimizing my memory management.

- I activated zram to compress the content of the last 1/4 of ram before stating the swapping of pages
- Since I'm using a dynamically generated swapfile through the systemd-swap service, I set it to preallocate the first GB
- Before activating the elevator I reduced all graphics settings to the minimum

Doing so, the in-game loading, after a lot of loading and swapping, finished, so I was able to save the game from the staring of the new location.
Now, I reverted my gfx settings and I can load the new saved game from the title screen without crashes.

Nice workaround! If someone runs into this problem in the future I will direct them at this forum thread. Sorry for the inconvenience and good luck with the rest of the game!

Thanks. I'm really enjoying it. :)
I hope for some patch addressing this issue, because, sometimes, it still crashes. Fortunately, after those changed, the oom_kill thread (out of memory killer) is able to close the game before the whole system hangs. So, I can retry without worrying about file system corruption after a hard reset. ^_^;

Probably it depends on how much free memory I have, and I think that this workaround won't do much to those who have the minimum of ram required.

Have not been able to play the game since I purchased it :( . I have 4 GB of memory and the game tells me that the application memory is full!
