mk47at: Hi Zach, are there any news about an upcoming release?
avatar
TimeDoctor: No updates, we still need an x-plat launcher/updater as I outlined here: http://community.ioquake.org/t/need-a-new-project-for-ioquake/487/5?u=timedoctor
Ok. I've read that some months ago. I don't agree that there is only the chance for one more update, but obviously it's not my decision.

korell: Does the custom widescreen resolution still break the intro video and cutscenes?
avatar
DreamedArtist: Yes it does there is no known fix for that yet... I am currently trying to program a fix to stack intro and other videos over the resolution fix to prevent it from going black screen.
Tonight I decided to see how ioQuake3 works with the game, and on doing so I found out that using ioQuake3 allows you to set a widescreen resolution (I'm using 1680x1050) via the menu settings and it still plays the cutscenes. Not sure if the cutscenes are stretched or hor- though, as they fill the screen, but either way it isn't really a concern considering what the cutscenes are.

Crosmando: Anyone got any comments on what ioQuake (http://ioquake3.org) is like? Does it work with the GOG version? Does it automatically do most of the stuff listed here?
Right now I think getting the download from there is more useful for Mac and Linux users. For you Mac guys:

1. Get Wineskin and ioq3, then download the Windows EXE for Q3.
2. Open Wineskin, download both the latest wrapper and version of Wine using the buttons. This is pretty self-explanatory.
3. Create a new blank wrapper, name it whatever. You don't need to add anything (Gecko, mono, etc) unless you plan on using it for something else, as you won't be running it.
4. Click on the wrapper, click install software. Click choose setup executable.
5. Let it do it's magic.
6. Refer to the setup instructions on ioquake3's readme. To get to your files, right click on your wrapper and click on show package contents. Go through the folders, when you come to GOG Games that's where the content is for Quake 3. Make sure to get both the main game and Team Arena's pak files.

There you go, you have Quake 3 native. Confirmed to work with El Capitan and everything below. This does indeed work with the Hi-Res textures.

Oh, and by the way: the Catch-The-Chicken mod sitting in the Windows downloads? Grab that, you can extract the EXE with The Unarchiver. Stick the ctc folder in your base and you have the mod ready to go.

Thanks for this thread was extremely helpful. Now I can play in 16:9 no problem.
When I try to run ioquake3 it gives me the error "You need to install Quake 3 Arena." I had already put the pak0.pk3 file from my Quake 3 installation into the baseq3 folder of ioquake3 's directory. Is it not reading the correct path?

Update: I finally got ioquake3 to run by just putting all the pk3 files in that baseq3 folder. But now every time I try to join a MP game, it keeps re-asking me for the CD-key. I checked the folder and the CD-key is already there, why does it keep asking me for this every time?

For high quality icons, buttons and more try this:
https://www.moddb.com/mods/high-quality-quake

If you don't have an CD-Key:
https://www.moddb.com/games/quake-iii-arena/downloads/quake-3-arena-keygen-script

You can also use a CD key with only these chars:
237abcdghjlprstw

Enter 16 times one of the chars (16x2, 16x3, 16x7, etc.)
It works also with mixed chars (8x2b, 8x3d, 8x7h, etc.)

HAVE FUN!

IIRC the PK3 data in the windows version is a seperate installer for ioQ3 due to rights. You might want to install that even though you're using the originals, I'm not sure if they're the same thing or not.

Your CD Key may need to be re-entered for the source port, it's been a while since I've last done that. IoQ doesn't have Punkbuster anyway, so the Key is really not required to play multiplayer.

To run Quake 3 on MAC or LINUX, simply copy your files from the 'baseq3' folder in your Quake III folder to the 'baseq3' folder in the ioquake folder. Then, launch and enjoy!

'ioquake3' can be found here: http://ioquake3.org/

For some REALLY slick graphics in Quake III, try out the Metal Tech v2 mod. It also works with ioquake. http://www.moddb.com/mods/metal-tech-v20-revolutions/downloads/metal-tech-v20-revolutions

Your Q3 Key (q3key) and q3config.cfg files should be in your baseq3 folder in your GOG or Steam versions of Quake III. Either should work with ioquake3. So copy those along with the PAK files to the baseq3 folder in ioquake3.
Everything has been updated People!

I even put a link to character skins and maps so enjoy the massive selection on the net!

Everyone who plays Quake 3 should use ioquake3. Regular Quake 3 hasn't had security updates in over a decade, ioquake3 continues to have security updates. See this post for information on the most recent big one:

https://ioquake3.org/2017/03/13/important-security-update-please-update-ioquake3-immediately/

tl;dr get on the latest builds from here. Go here if you have any issues.

DreamedArtist: HD RESOLUTION
This auto fixes the resolution for Team arena as well so no need to worry

http://blog.obelisk.ro/2010/09/widescreen-resolution-quake-3-ioquake3.html

Extract it then put the program in the main folder of the game and click to launch it then it will ask you for the resolution then it will create a desktop shortcut of the game to run in that resolution. works on XP,7,8,8.1,1
This program may create a shortcut to an old version of ioquake3, best to just use the Player's Guide.

Should IOQuake3 Arena be installed in a separate folder from the Steam version? or can I safely re-use the folder and let it overwrite whichever files it needs?

How do I keep game progress (kills, trophies) sync'ed between the two versions?

you drag it into the main game folder. or install it into it. there is instructions on how to do it and videos on the web that can help you if you are not sure on how too.

but for me I put it and replaced anything that was in the main folder for it.
Is there a way to rub SP quake 3 gold at 1080p since ioquake is gone now? Thanks
