Make a backup of your files beforehand, I suggest starting with a clean installation - you can also use Galaxy to "Manage Installation" and "Verify / Repair", otherwise read on!

Quake 1

Download QuakeSpasm (quakespasm-0.94.4_win64.zip)
webpage
file download

Open the "quakespasm-0.94.4_win64.zip" file and extract the contents of the inside folder to your Quake installation folder. (Overwrite any files if prompted.)

Download Quake 1 Music * (see notes at the bottom)
MEGA
Google Drive

Create "music" subfolders as follows, and unpack the .flac files to their appropriate folder:
id1\music <sndtrk_q1.zip>
hipnotic\music <sndtrk_q1_exp1.zip>
rogue\music <sndtrk_q1_exp2.zip>

Go back into your main Quake folder:
Rename the file "Glquake.exe" to "Glquake.exe.bak"
Rename the file "quakespasm.exe" to "Glquake.exe"

You may now use your Quake shortcuts, or Galaxy to launch your game of choice.

Run each game/expansion and setup your controls and video, check if the music plays. Have fun!

Quake 2

Download Yamagi Quake II (quake2-8.10.zip)
webpage
file download

Explore your Quake 2 folder and delete these files:
3.20_Changes.txt
quake2.exe
ref_gl.dll
ref_soft.dll
baseq2\gamex86.dll
baseq2\maps.lst
ctf\ctf2.ico
ctf\gamex86.dll
ctf\readme.txt
ctf\server.cfg
xatrix\gamex86.dll
rogue\gamex86.dll
Now, open the "quake2-8.10.zip" file, and extract the contents of the inside folder to your Quake 2 installation folder. (Overwrite any files if prompted.)

Download Quake 2 Music ** (see notes at the bottom)
MEGA
Google Drive

Create "music" subfolders as follows, and unpack the .ogg files to their appropriate folder:
baseq2\music <sndtrk_q2_ogg.zip>
rogue\music <sndtrk_q2_exp1_ogg.zip>
xatrix\music <sndtrk_q2_exp2_ogg.zip>

You may now use your Quake 2 shortcut, or Galaxy to launch your game of choice.

Run each game/expansion and setup your controls and video, check if the music plays. Have fun!

* These are lossless "accurate rip" flac files. Note: I am not convinced that Quake 1 has "pre-emphasis", so I have left the files exactly as they are on my retail disc. But for the sake of completion, I have included both SoX and iTunes de-emphasized copies of my original rip, those files can be found below:

** These are the highest quality .ogg files (Quality 10). They are sourced from "accurate rip" flac files. They are higher quality than the .ogg files provided by GOG, and I have included "The Reckoning" files as well. I also fixed that small mastering error pop/click at the beginning of the "Operation Overlord" (AKA Quake 2 Track 02, and The Reckoning Track 07)

Extra files: Q1 de-emphasised, Q2 flac (unsupported), and Operation Overlord pre-fix.

HUUUGE thanks! I tried several of the source ports on my own, and I couldn't get them to work. I recently bought the GOG version just to end my suffering, and then that one was not working either. But now it works. Thanks once again.

Hell yeah! I'm glad to hear this guide worked for you!
First of all thanks for the guide and the links.
But i have one question: as there are 6 Download links in your music file which file goes to which music folder?
Oh and how does the download with mega work?
When i click on transfer i get not asked where to download the files too.

Thansk for your work and help.

Edit:
oh well i'm an idiot. ^^
I forgot that this guide is for Quake 1 AND 2.
So i hope i'll find the destination where the Quake 2 files are loaded too.
Thanks again for your guide.

Edit 2:
Okay, everything worked fine.
Thanks again for all the help and the guide and the links.

djdarko: Quake 2
Working prefectly for me, thank you very much. I even tried Quake 2 exp http://quake2xp.sourceforge.net/ and its working smoothly (I needed to switch off the motion blur-makes me sick).
Here is something else you guys might find useful, my current config settings for each game.

Settings

Quake 1
Resolution: 1920x1080
WASD Controls
Always Run: Quakespasm
Mouse Speed: Full
gl_texturemode 1
r_particles 1
Crosshair: None

Quake 2
Resolution: 1920x1080
WASD Controls
Crosshair: Cross
OpenGL: 3.2
Always Run: On
Mouse Speed: Full

Just follow the included instructions for where to place them.

Thanks for putting this together. I now have both Quake and Quake 2 in widescreen with music. Saved me a lot of time.
Thanks for the guide. But I still have a problem: quakespasm doesn't automatically start the music. I can play the music with the music-command in the console but every time a level changes the music stops. Any idea what the problem could be?

Edit:
I take my question back. The music is playing, I just didn't recognize it...

Question about the quake 2 mission packs. So I am using yamagi but is the first mission in both mission packs use the same music as I get the same track on them and i double and triple checked to make sure I was putting the correct music files in the correct spots. It appears that track 6 is identical on both soundtracks so my question is: is track 6 the first track in both mission packs?

I've posted a list of tracks last year. Each line is one unique track. The first name is the name that GOG uses, the other names are the correct file names.

Doesn't really help me here. I used the Tracks directly from the OP. My question was is the music from starting mission of of both mission packs the same? I figured out both are using track 6 first but as I never had the original mission pacvks back in the day I have no idea what they are supposed to sound like.

Why? It does tell you that Rogue track 6 is the same as Xatrix track 8, while Xatrix track 6 is the same as Rogue track 7.

While it is true that Xatrix and Rogue play track 6 in the first mission, they play different tracks.

I don't see where you list the tracks anywhere in that thread. As I said I did not change anything I downloaded the OP tracks and put them in their respective folder. Mission one plays the same track for both expansions and that is is listed as track 6 in both expansions music provided by the OP so I have no real way of determining what the proper order is to change track titles nor does that thread you link to tell me that.

EDIT: Okay i finally figured out what you where talking about on that thread. I see where the tracks are ordered, but no way to compare that to what the OP listed so i am just going to rearange the ones in the GOG folder.
