Just discovered this available for my version of Windows and downloaded immediately.
Began to play (easy level)and can't even get over the first gap! I press space bar and run for it, end up on the floor.
What on earth am I doing wrong!
Was so pleased to be able to get it and so disappointed I'm getting stuck at once!

Try holding down SHIFT to sprint.

The controls may be different in GL QUAKE - so have a look in the options menu - in game.

For Darkplaces and Quakespasm that will work as they already use modern keybinds.

I enable the option to always run in the menus.
Ignore the menu "Always Run", type +speed in the console or even better make a autoexec.cfg file with +speed in the first line.

The reason are explained here:
http://quake.speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/articles/WallHug/speed.htm

Meanwhile, you probably want to put in the autoexec.cfg:
+speed
+mlook
sv_aim 1

So you run always, you activate the mouse look and disable autoaiming.
The menu option seems to work for me, but then again I'm using the Dark Places source port which probably fixed those issues.
Do you actually try your strafe speed? Try to go forward and strafe at the same time with the "always run" option or pressing the run button.
