Hello everyone!

When I go to the video options I can't change the resolution. I tried the arrow keys and several others but it doesn't do anything.

I think you're supposed to change it through the console.

You need to do that from the windows command line as follows:

1. Press start at the bottom left corner of your screen.
2. Left-click on the Quake icon and right-click on Properties.
3. You have to modify the field called 'Target'. Mine reads: "D:\GOG Games\Quake\Glquake.exe" -width 1366 -bpp 32.

Unfortunately I can only change the bpp from 16 to 32, I can't run the game at any other resolution other than 640x480. If anyone would lend a hand I would be most grateful.

Same problem here running 1080 (-width 1920 -bpp 32) I get an error -wglcreatecontect failed

:EDIT: Solved Below** with ngl config tool.

You could try adding a modern quake engine to your install.

quakespasm works a treat:-

http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/download.htm

Pick the correct version for your OS (I'm running Win 8.1 64 bit), unzip the package, drop the files into your C:\Games\Quake folder (wherever your main quake install folder is located) then run quakespasm.exe. It will detect your quake install and run the game with full widescreen, multi-resolution support, etc. Just configure your desired resolution from the ingame menu.

quakespasm also has the advantage of being able to run the soundtrack files from your HDD, no need to mount the cue files to ge the background soundtrack playing.

You can also use it to run the add-on packs, just alter the GOG shortcuts like this:-

(Right click on the shortcut, select "properties, then edit the "Target" line)

Base Quake:-

"C:\Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe"

Dissolution of Eternity:-

"C:\Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe -game rogue"

Scourge of Armagon:-

"C:\Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe -game hipnotic"

I couldn't get hte command line function to work either, but this is a handy workaround.

I successfully changed the resolution using the NGlide configuration tool. Didn't even have to touch the command line.
Thank you lot, I'll give it a dekko later.

Quakegasm worked like a charm. I also like there are versions for Mac and Linux (32bit and 64bit). Silky smooth. Gracias, homeslice.

Small correction:

When running missionpacks (with Quakespasm or with any other Quake engine), just use "-rogue" or "-hipnotic". Don't use "-game rogue" or "-game hipnotic".

The "-game <modfolder>" option is generally the way you would run a user-made mod, but the missionpacks are "special" mods that have some features baked into the engine itself. If you don't run missionpacks properly then your statusbar will be messed up (and maybe some other things).

Not anymore. That annoyance is a thing of the past.

The manual states:
“Changes in 0.90.0
o Command line: "-game {quoth/hipnotic/rogue}" is now treated the
same as -quoth, -hipnotic, or -rogue.”
Hmm! Good to know. It's cool that Quakespasm catches that.

No harm in doing it the "right" way though, since that will work across all Quake engines (including Quakespasm).

How do you do that? It doesn't seem to say anything about the game in Nglide and I think that means it would just configure the desktop, not the game.

EDIT: Just found out how, but it doesn't seem to work. changing the Aspect ratio just makes the view even smaller.

At 1920x1080 which is my monitor, there is an annoying black bar at the top of the screen which is the problem I started with.

How do I do it through the command line?

Typing "Glquake -width(1920) -bpp (32)" does not work; it just loads the game with no changes and adding the height doesn't work either.
Scratch the last two posts I made: I just ran the game in compatibility mode for Windows 95 and it fixed it. :) I recommend other windows users trying the same just in case.
Or use Quakespasm, a source port that updates compatibility, resolution support, controls, etc
