I saw that this was on sale today, and I opened it in my library to look at the patch version, and... it's still frozen in time.

Punch Club is currently on patch 1.1 on gog.com. Steam received patch 1.11 in March 2016. That is more than 15 months ago, and a few more patches since then.

Not only did GOG get the Armello treatment from this scumbag developer, but patch 1.1 features the extremely buggy release version of the Dark Fist expansion.

I wish Lazy Bear Studios nothing but failure in the future. If you absolutely have to try this game, please consider piracy. Despite the publisher's after-the-fact shunning of gog.com, there is a downloadable version somewhere on the internet. Paying customers on gog.com must either resort to piracy or double-pay the publisher on Steam, and frankly the second would be unthinkable.

They probably just can't be bothered because they counted the money and concluded that it wasn't worth the trouble to support their secondary markets. Anything you can do to badmouth them and make sure they fail is appreciated.

gog.com shouldn't even continue to sell this product to new buyers given the way the publisher has chosen to treat this release.

Unfortunately no, it's still the ages old version of this otherwise interesting game. I bought it on Steam (it's drm-free there) some months ago and activated the game via connect today. The version on GOG ist still 1.1 from March 2016 - on Steam the game got the latest update (1.31) in February 2017. I think the game can be considered abandoned here on GOG. I agree that the game should be removed from the shop. Unfortunately this game isn't an exception, there are quite some games that are abandoned on GOG. I always check the changelogs of games I intend to buy here with the update-list in Steam, it's the only way to be sure to get the proper version. Many games I've bought on Steam just because of that.

How can you check the version of games here and on steam without first buying them?

That's a simple thing: On Steam go on the game's page and look for the "update history". On GOG just look in the forum of the specific game under the pinned thread "changelog".

You are correct, I just noticed myself that there isn't a changelog for every game... in the case of this game I think I read some reviews on the game's page here on GOG where somebody adressed the lack of updates, if I remember correctly. Then I went to Steam to compare it. And I'm happy I did. ;)
You can still buy it on Steam, it doesn't need the Steam client to start and is basically drm-free (many indie titles are drm-free on Steam in fact).
