I found the second Port Royale to be lacking since it only allows you to control one ship at a time in a naval battle, whereas in the original Port Royale you can control up to ten ships at once. This is a rather big difference between the two titles, since it opens up new strategies for naval combat. This is the main reason I don't play my copy of Port Royale 2.

I also think Port Royale 2 is a bit uglier than the original; meh 3D versus not-badly-done isometric.

Additionally, I find that the first game is a little bit more difficult than the sequel. For example, towns don't have their productions set based on some guidelines, with each one producing exactly five commodities, meaning you can't rely on a town's type to know beforehand what kinds of goods you can buy/produce there.
