I have the exact same problem:
if i start it from GOG galaxy the system literally slows down and nothing happens (like the cursor is almost impossible to control and the pc is completely unresponsive).
If i start PTB from any exe in the folder i get the "application error (000x22).

What i did so far:
- Running in compatibility mode
- using process monitor gave me "access denied" on some dll in the SYSWO64, gave the full control to my user, now the access denied doesn't show in process monitor but I get a lot of "FILE LOCKED WITH ONLY READERS" but i dont actually now if it's ok or not.
- deleting ati.dll
- used the exe offered by dustman31 but nothing changed sadly

popolous 2 works normally

If you can find which DLLs you're getting the "FILE LOCKED WITH ONLY READERS" error on, and try copying those files to the populous - the beginning directory. That might help?

I did it, like 25 files
and now i get this error:
the ordinal 4 could not be located in the dynamic link library pathofit/weanetr.dll
here is an image of it

also i want to addd that in the monitor process there are many "buffer overflow" and " no name found" for some registry entries
Googling that suggests it's that the moved weanetr.dll file hasn't been registered (as a COM server). You can do this manually by:

Rundll32 weanetr.dll DllRegisterServer

That's actually quite normal (in Win32, programmers don't know ahead of time how much memory to allocate for a registry call.. So typically they do one call with no buffer to retrieve the proper size of the key to retrieve, then another once they've created that buffer..

i run the command from the dos and i get an error that weanetr is not a win32 application...
I even bought it on origin and i get an error about the same file, I think is liek some major incompatibility with win10...

I believe there's been a significant change to the way windows handles DLLs in win10, and these problems are deriving from there..

Do you, by any chance, have more than one copy of (different versions of) weanetr.dll on your system?

I downloaded from the internet a 140kb version of the weanetr.dll , for the GOG version of the game it didnt change anything. for the Origin versione it starts but it crashes istantly (instead of not starting at all like for the GOG version).
At this point only who actually made this library can solve this lol.

I can only suggest trying to put the weanetr.dll from the origin version in the gog directory. Don't have win10 myself, so I can't really experiment with it myself..

is the same file as this one is 191kb, (i tried anyway obviously).
I downlaoded also some free versions of the game, and it crashes on startup even on those... i guess that's it. I asked for a refund.

Interesting. I've two versions of it on my system - a 191k version in my populous the beginning dir and a 141k version in my dungeon keeper 2 dir..

One thing you might try is creating a file called D3DPopTb.exe.local (the contents are unimportant).. (Or D3DPopTb_l.exe.local if you're using my version - the start of the filename should match the program name..)

Apparently windows uses the presence of such a file as a hint to prefer copies of DLLs in the current directory.

putting local after the extension makes it impossibile to open, where should i put it?

Keep the executable's filename as is, but create another empty file named exename.exe.local - It doesn't matter what's in it - windows will apparently just make a decision based on whether this file exists..

Hello

I'm a total n00b - but love Populous and can't get it to work on my Surface Pro 4. I'm not sure what this tech stuff means.

Does anyone know in laymans how to get around the (0xc00...0022) error?
