Well... I guess I must say that I think. Well... For a first walkthrough player have no need in mods or patch-mods. Exception is widescreen mod if there are issues with monitor (but I'd rather not recommend it, cause first time is a first time and original look must be seen, I guess). The good unofficial patch (not mod) is Platter fix-pack. For first play that would be enough, trust me.

Oh. Almost forgot. I have one problem with Widescreen on my Radeon 4650. You know, if I play an infinity-game with original resolution, everything is good. But if I change resolution ti 1280x1024 then framerate is kinda slow. I checked this in BG TOS. And PST with 1280x1024 on GF8600GT goes smoothly, but I has to change it to Radeon. I do not have aby clue, why 2d game must go slow on almost modern VC. Do you have any thoughts?

absolutely disagree, but hey, if playing vanilla version floats your boat, go for it.

About your problem, sorry..no idea, haven't experienced any problems on my end.

I am talking about first time. The second, third, etc - do whatever your want ) I think this is the most logical way to play such games. They are already have everything to be ideal.
I disagree as well. When I grab an older game, the first thing I look for are mods that fix bugs, dialog, and possibly restore cut content. For this game (and I've never played it before), I installed the widescreen mod and GUI, the Ultimate fix pack (tons of bug fixes), dialog spelling and grammar corrections, subtitled cutscenes, the Unfinished Business pack (restores missions that were intended to be in the game but were cut due to time/budget), banter accelerator, Add Quickload (adds quickload to F10 - very convenient), THAC0 display (easier to read your stats).

Just for a few. I don't feel this will skew my first run through the game at all, and don't see why anyone would want to go completely vanilla and put up with the things these mods fix. I highly doubt the developers intended the bugs and typos to be part of the game experience, nor do I think they'd have left the cut content out if given the choice. I think these mods will actually make the game much closer to the developer's actual intended experience.

Robmonster: I already have BG2 in a box somewhere...
GOG BG1 + disc BG2 + mods would not work out well.

Playing in the native res made sense when the game was released...on smaller monitors. If you have a larger monitor now (likely), it simply doesn't make sense.

Precisely.

You beat me to it.

This doesn't just apply to Torment either. Some of these older games have flat out game-breaking glitches and bugs, or are so unbalanced and unstable that there's no wonder they didn't sell very well when they first came out. Word gets around... So no, the first thing anyone who buys an old RPG should do is apply all the community patches and mods that fix bugs and balance problems, before playing it for the first time.

That way, the first play through of these great old games will be a positive experience for you.
Yeah. Playing it first time vanilla is completely counterproductive. It is more likely to actually make you hate the game due to some unfixed bug or its ugly graphics.

Why do that, when you can play perfectly optimized version with lot of restored content (made and intended by devs) ? Does not compute.

Modded PST ftw.

Exactly! Thanks again for the guide and links, they made it ridiculously easy.

Now we need this thread stickied.
I vote for a sticky on this, very helpfull and to the point
Paul_cz - thanks for the guide. I was able to fully patch/mod this and get it to work on Windows 7. much appreciated

RobbieGee: I made mine work (I had the same problem as you). I opened the command line and started the exe files from there. That was the only difference.
You, sir, are a life saver. Worked like a charm for me from command line. Thanks so much.
Step 4: Install the Ultimate Fixpack (Highly recommended)

What it does: Fixes hundreds of bugs left in the game.

You definitely want this installed before playing the game.
This can't be emphasized enough.
I'm getting this message after installing the widescreen and ui mods:

An Assertion failed in F:\Torment\Source\chitin\ChVideo.cpp at line number 4322
Programmer says: No valid video modes supported.

Any advice?

It means that when you installed the wide screen mod you typed in a resolution that's not supported by your hardware. I did it a couple of times on accident. Fully uninstall the mods and the game, reinstall, and pick another resolution and that will fix it.
Thanks. I've sorted it out now.
