Since it's happening without the widescreen mod as well, what are your hardware specs and what OS are you running?
I had the exact same problem. It occurred because I had set the widescreen mod resolution dimensions to something different than what I had set my desktop dimensions to. Go to your display and check to see where on the slider you are (i.e. what number x number you are) and re-install the widescreen mod using those exact numbers. Hope that helps. Cheers!

I believe you are correct. I got this same error today when I changed the dimensions in the widescreen mod from my native 1680x1050 to 1440x900. I then ran the mod again (I didn't uninstall anything) and selected the next lower widescreen monitor resolution which was 1280x800. Bingo! Worked like a charm when I tried to run the game.

It turns out that I like this resolution since it's about as sharp as I can handle with my eyesight. Anything smaller and I would have a hard time seeing the UI, much less the loot drops of your first "battles."

Hope that confirmation helps, mates!

NeoGutsman:
Glad I helped. I would've expected 1440x900 to work, but I guess it just doesn't like it. 1280x800 is a fine resolution, anyway. I do agree the UI is too small on 1680x1050. I may go with 1280x800 myself when I get back into it.

I have tried multiple combinations of settings in the widescreen mod and my monitor but still set this error. Any other suggestions? I am running a lenovo T61 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M card.
I have the exact same issue with the exact same PC (Lenovo T61) and graphics card (Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M). Ideas?
I also have a problem running the game on 1680x1050 desktop with the widescreen mod + ui mod. Windows 7 x64. So, as a workaround I set the resolution to 1280x960 (4:3) and the game runs filling the whole screen anyway.

Were you able to find resolution on this?

I installed the game from GOG Galaxy, run it - everything was fine in full screen except I realised it auto-installed in English, so I went back to GOG Galaxy, chose Polish, some updates downloaded, I tried to run the game - boom, this error. I uninstalled the game and realised GOG Galaxy is not letting me download the game in Polish at 1st attempt, so I went to the online version instead. All fixed.
Using compatibility mode fixed it for me.
I am having the same issue currently. Installed the widescreen mod, but it didn't help. Tried adjusting my monitor resolution, but that didn't work either. I even scaled down to its native 800x600, but it still displayed the same message.

Any ideas?
