It says that they 'make life easier' and can't be toggled on or off once I've started a game, but no indication of exactly what they are. Tutorial popups? Map markers showing exactly where I need to go? Rigging combat to stop bad things happening too often?

I can't tell if I want them on or not if I don't know what they are.

I found this page on the Gamepedia wiki, which explains most of it.

It mostly influences options that are already present in the game menu, so that you can see the tooltips there for more information on each option.

I believe that, in a game where you have Expert Mode enabled, the related options are greyed out and / or unchecked. So that's a good way to see the effects in game. You'll also notice the difference if you then uncheck Expert Mode. But only do this in a test game, since re-checking it is not possible.

I think some of that information may be old. I'll see when I finish downloading. Some of the info referred to is a couple years old. The options as they exist in the manual and the gameplay previews I've seen seem to be much simpler than what is described in the wiki.
