I got these extras from the Definitive Edition:

_ Almanac
_ Collectors Book
_ Cookbook
_ Strategy Guide
_ Novella

The Strategy guide contains walkthroughs and spoilers. I might read a bit about character creation, but will leave the rest. For the remaining four items, are these better read before the game starts, or after it is finished? Will they contain spoilers?

None of these beside Strategy Guide contain any spoilers. I've read them before starting the game apart from the Novella, which I've read after completing the game. They give you more insight to the game's lore and world.

Are the novellas any good? I found out there are others available as ebooks.

I've only read the one written by Chris Avellone - The House of Wael. It's pretty decent, is has an audiobook version as well.
