I agree with Katsunami. One should never relabel a release and have 2 different versions with the exact same name. GOG really has made a mess of it.
I've added a petition for improvements to the patch list to the Wishlist, throw your vote in!
I have never had a problem patching, and I own 89 games (counting those freebies, however many of them that there are). A few times I've done something a bit wrong and it took me a minute to look through it and figure out where I went wrong. The error messages are wonderful tools that people should read carefully (and not ignore).

I don't really want them to mess with things as they are, so sorry.
Everything that has been stated above about getting the patch error and being confused about what is going on happened to me as well.

I've used the GOG patching/download system in the past for other games and never had an issue. The only real problem here is that they replaced a file with a new one without changing the name. This is kinda annoying but if the new patch 1.0.3 is cumulative (includes the April 2015 1.0.3) then this isn't an issue for those just patching now. It's only annoying for those of us who patched 1.0.3 previously.

All this said... I did a quick search for the PoE community forum and found this post and fixed this issue in about 2 minutes, so it's a non-issue for me. I could see how other's mileage could vary though. Despite the easy fix it is non-intuitive and confusing.

Katsunami: WTF... I see. It seems there have been two patches of 81 MB. I only have 2.0.1.2 in my offline archive, so that's the only one installed. What is 2.1.0.3 that's currently online? The hotfix?

It doens't matter. I like to have the least amount of stacking patches if at all possible, and I have no running game at this moment, so I'll just redownload the current full installer and the 1.04 patch and re-install. Hm... on second thought... I don't even know if that will work. Maybe I need to install the full installer, then the current 1.03 patch that's up, and then 1.04. Mwelp. A well. I'll see.

juveilko: I had the same problem. I had 1.0.3 version running. I did the following:

Re-download 1.0.3 patch
Apply 1.0.3 patch - again
Apply 1.0.4
???
Profit.
Thank you! This worked perfect. I wish everyone would be so concise on problem-solving when they post on these like you are. Now I know I regret purchasing this on GOG and not steam. Manually patching games in 2015 is crazy

If that's what it takes to support DRM-free gaming in 2015, I don't mind patching manually :)

Also, manually patching means control over the game version. Sometimes you don't want a inferior version enforced on you...
Manually patching makes it sound so complicated and elaborate, when all you've got to do is click on a button...

Also, as others have said, handling your installation yourself, gives you control over it. You can't have everything run automatic and still have control. It's one or the other.
