Though successful in running PG2 without Windows 8.1 shutting it down on my previous notebook, my present one has a Conexant sound card which has presented issues that have taken about 6-months to resolve. I am uncertain whether everything done has had a positive effect though am reasonably certain that none have had a negative effect.

1. Update to the Newest Conexant Driver by pressing the Windows and "X" key, choosing Device Manager, Sound video and game controllers, Right Click and choose Update Driver.

2. Open and Turn Off the Audio Wizard found in the desktop Programs Menu (Audio EQ, etc. can be set in Smart Audio Program).

3. Running Win 8/8.1 (same as suggested for Win 7 in other discussions):
In File Explorer locate the OS (C:) folder, open the GOG Games folder and the Panzer General 2 folder.
Right click on the ddraw.dll (.intel extension too on mine) and Rename by adding the suffix "OLD" or "REMOVE" or any other of you liking.
Rename the d3dx9_42.dll in the same manner
Note, you may need set yourself up as an Administrator to change these.

4. To run the game from your Desktop:
Right click on your PG2 Desktop Shortcut to set Shortcut
Change the Target from PanzerGeneral2.EXE to PG2UK220.EXE and click Apply
Click on your PG2 Desktop Shortcut to set Properties Compatibility:
Run in Reduced Color 8-bit 256 Color mode
Run in 640x480 Screen Reduction Mode

5.To run from your Windows "Metro" Menu (a different shortcut than the Desktop):
Right click on the Panzer General 2 App icon and choose File Location
Change the Target from PanzerGeneral2.EXE to PG2UK220.EXE and click Apply
Click on your PG2 Desktop Shortcut to set Properties Compatibility:
Run in Reduced Color 8-bit 256 Color mode
Run in 640x480 Screen Reduction Mode

6. Occasionally the Mouse cursor will disappear or the in-game mouse over icons labels will start saying "Chat" while running the game, which I found can be corrected by minimizing the game using the Windows key and the reopening it from the tray.

7. I have not experienced Windows closing the game with these settings though I still save the game quite frequently using Autosave (Ctrl-A) just in case.

Hope this works for you.
