Throwing in my 2 cents, this patch is absolutely phenomenal. I haven't encountered any errors whatsoever, and the game looks bloody gorgeous. Going from that little box in the middle of huge black borders to full-screen mega-pixel madness was like going from dial-up to DSL. This patch is absolutely necessary to get the full game experience!
Wow! Thanks so much for this Zenger!
Been using for a few days and it's awesome to be able to play fullscreen!

Oh and cheers Muskie for those .ini settings : 3
sweet thanks mang! I installed this at 800x600 on my little netbook, runs perfectly!

Wow, this is wonderful work. Many thanks to Zenger for the patch and Muskie for the .ini tweaks.

Two small things still have me wondering if it can be tweaked further. I wonder about is whether or not it's possible to change the camera angle for when you are crawling. As it is right now, when you're in 1280x768, your character will be completely off the screen when you crawl because the top and the bottom of the image are cut off. This makes it tough to tell whether or not you're out in the open. Also, when I go underwater and look up through the surface of the water, the water doesn't appear transparent and seems to display a strange graphical glitch rather than letting me see what's above the surface as it behaves in the unmodded version of the game. Does the .ini file give us the ability to make changes to things like this?

This patch is absolutely amazing, so amazing in fact that there aren't any words I can think of to convey it. Thanks so so much!
Are there any alternate mirrors? Megaupload seems to despise my computer and violently rejects any attempts to get anything off of it.

EDIT: Disregard, I have no reading skills.

Hi,

I own the original DVD from 1999 out it runs well on my Ubuntu 10.10 Linux with Wine 1.2.1. Now I want to install this hires patch and even purchased this GoG Version of Outcast. But its only in english!? My original Outcast starts in german and I can't find a language setting in the Outcast menu. How can I change the language?

There are a buch of topics about this:

In summary, you must copy some files to have german localisation.

Thanks! I just wonder, why this wasn't necessary with my DVD installation but with the GoG Installation.

So, now I have 1280x1024 in german. So far, so good. But where is the "Hi-Res" of this patch? I have a bigger window to look in the Outcast world, but I can't notice and quality improvement! The pixels are not smaller. From other game's hi-res patches I am used to have higher resolutioned graphics and textures. (I know, Outcast has voxels). But I expected to have a higher resolution per centimeter. As this is not the case, it's not a "hi-res" patch but just a "screen size" patch. Am I right or what???

The game's resolution is definitely much higher, but the number of voxels the game uses to display the world haven't been increased. This stuff was designed for a computer from 1998 and my understanding is that it's hard coded into the game. This patch isn't a reskin of the game with new models and textures. It's simply a hack to make the game display its original assets in a higher resolution. There are things you can tweak (listed in the .ini hacks earlier in this thread) to make Outcast look better on a modern machine, like increase the draw distance and make the game use the high detail character models even when they're far away from the camera, but it's still fundamentally the same game from 1998, resolution aside.
Thank you for creating this patch, I completed the game the first time in 400*300 :) And when I wanted to play again a couple of years ago I couldn't get the 640 * 480 patch working, but now it's in 1280 * 1024. Hands down, awesome job!

B.t.w. I found a solution for the "black flickering" at least it worked in my case. Disable the animated tray icon of your virusscanner(like Avast)

Have you tried opening the file as an Administrator?

If that fails, rename the file to something else (e.g. character_detail_highold.ini)
Launch notepad and copy the contents of the original file (or the one you quoted) and save the file as 'character_detail_high.ini'.

Same thing can be done with the [WaterEffect] part if that also doesn't let you save the changes.
I don't suppose anyone has an idea as to how to fix that graphical glitch you get when the camera's under water and the world above the water is some yellow/green stripey blur? That's the only issue I've seen with this patch.

I just got this game, and Installed the game and V3 right after it, but I have major lag, is there a way to fix it ? I aswell can't find the character_details.ini file, only character_details_high, character_details_medium/low etc....
