NMS has proven it can be a game with the 1.3 update.. Or so I thought. These pitfalls landed me in a pretty sh**ty position. It really depends if HelloGames is paying attention or even testing their own game. So here's the scoop.

Hydroponics trays are bugged. They need refueling randomly if you leave the planet, they need refueling if you move your freighter or reloading a save on a freighter. Many plants take real time hours to grow and the only stopgap to avoiding this kind of misery of resetting trays is building and using biodomes which also take a lot of resources to build with offering a fraction of the the harvest depending on base builds... And it doesn't look like HG even knows this issue exist despite there being reports of it here and there. To the players that farm and use these along with cuboid rooms, I feel your pain. We need a fix right now...

Freighters are a glorified ship garage at this point. Farming applications with space saving base construction techniques are pointless as explained above. There is also a nasty bug to where you first purchase a freighter and warp it to another and reload a save system will change it's paint scheme entirely. Since this game has no ship customization beyond slots and mods, you could end up stuck with something very undesireable looking. After all that. It gets worse when you add in the fact you cannot afford these things on chump change, they cost an upward of 80+ million credits (Units) and it will drive you insane trying to grind for one with any known method of gaining units outside of save game editors and fan mods.

Ghost Multiplayer: I wanted to experience it. Hell, I even convinced my cousin to get it on the same platform in fear of no crossplatform play in the future. But for some reason Gog doesn't have it? It's been 12 days and nothing is happening. Is this regret I feel from canceling my preorder on Steam last year? I don't want to rebuy this game for the sake of gaining a feature that was lost. But damnit Gog, get on the horn with Sean Murry right now and get that bearded desk jockey to work with you. Get something going before I completely lose my patience.

Sorry, long grinds can make me feel this way. I was set and ready to do some long voyages in NMS but the problems just kept piling up. I know a forum isn't a place for something a therapist can help with. But I want to know if anyone else has had the has had any similar setbacks and feelings with NMS lately?
@Phoobie,

Farming is only a little game part of NMS, you seem to attach too much importance to this. And there is other stuff to farm that this hydroponic stuff you talk about. If it's for the money, what about crafting some techs with Sulfurine? Or what about the classic Gravitino Balls, do they take 1 day real time to grow? I don't think so, always when I return to my base I see them: Big and neat.

But you are right: Because the farming is only 1 game aspect, it's very much possible that HG neglected to make it run perfectly, at the moment they are very busy with patches in almost all game aspects of their new update.
Once this is done, NMS will shine like the good star you want it to be, I'm sure :)

Cheers,

I have to admit i'm more than sick of endless "patches" that never really fix anything of significance, such as some of the things you mention above, or add anything to the endless grind that makes up most of this game. I can see nothing changing, and a sad slide into obscurity for NMS, especially as they seem caught in an endless loop of patches rather than creating some truly interesting gameplay.
@XenonS

Trust me when I say farming is the only logical way to obtain a freighter or expensive ship without going completely nuts from repetitious activities. For something so little as you say, it sure beats the hell out of collecting and looting a bunch of stuff around multiple systems for months on end just to get somewhere. Sean Murry pretty much backed me into a corner with those ship price updates. You could argue missions would help me get there too. That's more effort than it's worth. I'm not saying I want to sail through this unchallenged, but pacing is pretty fubar right now..

These days it is a very rare game i find that does not do a whole bunch of things i find strange, or flat out annoying.

I've been gaming a while and in truth this has always been the case, but maybe i'm just more attuned to noticing these issues than i used to be?

Anyway one thing helped me 'fix' my games (for the most part): Mods.

Even NMS has mods that can 'fix' a variety of issues that Hello Games may have overlooked or just not had enough time to get around to dealing with.

So yeah, go check out the mod thread and see if you have answers to your problems in there?

Hello Games and Sean have said they want to keep working on NMS forever, and with such an ambitious game i can see that makes perfect sense for a team of their size and resources, so maybe it is best to look at NMS as a long-tail game that will constantly change and hopefully improve as time goes by, and in the meantime you can probably find a mod for those most annoying aspects.

And this is not just specific to NMS either. I don't think i play any non modded games these days, from Bethesda games to Civilization. Every game i play can just be made much better with a selection of good mods.

Farming IMO is the poor players' activity in NMS. The fastest way to get a freighter currently is to increase your REP with the Guilds and take 500k+ missions. You can take more than once at a time. You can skip farming and base-building completly if you want, for me that's only eye-candy and I do it for that.

ATM, following Atlas story or chasing Glyphs is much more interesting than bothering about my credits :)
And no, there is no grinding anymore. If you go on space stations or trading posts, you can buy all important stuff in big quantities. It's up to you if you want to grind.
