Pathfinder Update 1.2 breaks many mods - As we found with the Foundation Update you will have to only use mods that have been updated to work on this latest Pathfinder update version. The same method for getting your mods to work is outlined below.

Foundation Update 1.1 breaks many mods - also as of the first patch (1.12) for it you have to change the way you use mods and you have to have a mod that works with the Foundation Update (1.1). Once you have an updated mod follow these steps:

Look for the file DISABLEMODS.TXT and change it to a different name or delete it.
Then create a folder called MODS in your PCBANKS folder.
Move your updated mods into the GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\MODS folder
Restart the game - you will get a message telling you the game is modded then carry on as normal.

General tips on modding:

1. Always back up your save game before adding a new mod. Put that backup somewhere safe!

Saves game folder is normally in C:\User\*Your User Profile Name\AppData\Roaming\Hello Games\NMS

*The User Profile Name will be specific to you.
Also AppData may be a hidden file, so you might need to go into Folder Options and show hidden files/folders

2. Always read all the modders notes about how to install the mod, and also read through the thread of the mod to maybe get tips about potential problems etc.

3. Mod not functioning? Post a question in the mod thread where you downloaded it from. The modder may be able to help you more quickly.

4. Sometimes you need to delete the whole /SHADERCACHE folder to get a mod to work. On game restart it rebuilds this folder, so don't worry about that, but a mod might require it be built again after installing. You may also need to delete the 'Cache' folder in your save game folder.

5. Mod 'load order'. People who mod their games a lot will know that phrase right? Well it seems that even at this early stage of NMS mod development, this can be a method to solve potential mod conflicts. One example i saw in the reddit mods forum was about someone having difficulty getting the excellent Immersive Space mod to work.

The solution was to simply rename the mod .pak file to '_Zimmersivespace.pak'

The game reads load order alphabetically and numerically, so in this case putting the 'Z' in the name of the .pak file made it load last which in turn made it function with the other mods it had been conflicting with.

In general i have taken this renaming option:

_001_MOD.AsteroidsHits.pak
_002_MOD.IronAsteroidFields.pak

etc. Most mods come in the _MOD.name.pak format so adding an extra underscore then number before that is a good way to handle load order.

This is very much a trial and error process until we get good mod manager support etc.

Another solution I have seen given was to uninstall the mod, load the game, then leave the game, then re-install the mod and load your game again.

Edit: I have read some reports (not 100% confirmed yet) that some of the mods will stop functioning when the new patches/updates come from Hello Games. So try the highlighted suggestion above.

Where to get the mods?

So far there are two main sites hosting mods for NMS and here are the links for those:

http://nomansskymods.com/

That can be a bit slow at times but seems the main/initial place that mods are being posted to.

http://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/

The Nexus (familiar to Bethesda gamers no doubt!) also has some mods, most coming here from that first site, but i expect to see it get it's own as time goes by. It's a 'faster' site in general.

This third link i picked from Reddit, and it is the official reddit thread for everything about modding in NMS. It is bound to have some useful info for us all:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyMods

As the main reddit thread has become increasingly negative (and had it's own recent problems!) you might want to check out this other reddit where people are more interested in enjoying the game:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nomanshigh/comments/4yhudh/nms_information_compilation

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- -----------

Huge mod news! - All the game files can now be accessed by modders, even the MBIN types, so pretty much any type of mod can now be built (in theory). Info here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyMods/comments/508nwe/mbincompiler_now_supports_decompiling_recompiling/

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- -----------

Mod highlight - Note: my running modlist is post #39 of this thread

Edit: this section is outdated and mods keep coming, your best bet is to go to the site you get your mods from and view the avialable mods by 'popularity' or 'downloads' to get an idea of the most popular mods.

I don't come here often, and i do not even have NMS yet (I plan to get it from GOG in a month or so) but for my money being able to Mod NMS will be HUGE. We have official modding tools coming form Hello Games themselves at some point, but even without those and in such a short space of time it is very encouraging to see what the modding community have been able to do so far.

I plan to update this thread as more sites come online, so feel free to add your own links for all things relating to modding NMS, recommendations for mods are all welcome.
No matter what I try I cannot get any of the mods to work with my GOG version of NMS. I follow all instructions provided, yet no changes occur when i load. I have a friend with a Steam copy of NMS who has no issues, but for some reason the GOG version won't run the mods. Anyone else have this issue?

Not having the game yet i just can't say. Off the top of my head i would suggest not installing mods exactly the same way as the Steam version (so check you are putting it in the right place for your GOG version of the game). You might also go post your problem in the forums/comments where you got your mod from, as the modder might be able to help you get it working.

And check my last Edit to the OP, as it has some new advice that might help you?

Also this is very early in the life of modding NMS, stuff will be rough and all manner of complications added as Hello Games patch up the base game. It will be a while before the whole modding scene matures and stability and functionality improves.

Thanks for your assistance. I will try and post my problem on the mods website. Hope you enjoy
NMS in the event you ever buy it.
Make sure you backup your save games before running any mods.

=(
I will certainly be checking out these mods in around a month or so. The Nexus is my favourite mod site.

Sorry i could not help with specifics more. And i definitely will buy NMS, it has amazing potential! I'm just too busy in real life to 'risk' getting it right now! :)

That is good advice, i'll add it to the first post :)
I'd love a mod which lowers the amount of resources your suit/weapons and your starship burns through. Also one which increases your movement/run speed.
Low-Flight Mod is a must, it makes landing a breeze and saves you refueling when you land at the little beacons or finally on the pad! Thanks http://nomansskymods.com/!

if you're playing NMS at the moment i would highly recommend the fast actions and low flight mods as they make game just 100% better. fast walking speeds are also great choices.

Low flight is just such a huge improvement, you can even fly under water!

I love the flying mod, don`t so much like the water part of it, but it is excellent anyway.

Fast actions? What does that do? Does it cut out the watse of time stuff the game insists on shving us, like floating away or going to cinema screens whenever you do something?

If only it got rid of the cinema screens, when i hear that sound i cringe everytime. No Fast Actions gets rid of the tedious holding e for most actions to just a click. It wasn't intill i used it that i truely grasped how much time i was wasting. enjoyment level +.

what you got a against going under water!? ;P impractical but its a nice gimmick. Have you flown through a underwater cave? got try it once!

I'm not likely to keep this copy here up to date since I have a thread on steam specifically dedicated to what mods I am currently running: http://steamcommunity.com/app/275850/discussions/5/361798516965206615/
I know odd I have a thread there, but lets face it more folks there, plus the ease of screenshot storage even for GOG games is nice.
I also plan to add more compare shots on Steam as time permits.

Just a listing of the mods I am currently running, how I've named the files (in case it makes a difference in load order or some-such). I like the mods to actually say mod, so all my installed mods get that and a number to allow me to control load order.
I will be adding screenshots as well. To follow and show differences. I need to redo a few, etc.
Consider this thread a work in progress. I still need to detail check each one in the combined and make sure they are all playing nice. Each was included so far based on standalone tests.
Screenshots from the exact same spot in locations one normally cannot save were done using the instructions found in this thread:
