I haven't played this game in ages so I decided to start fresh.

I needed to find some item which I could not manufacture so I went hunting for it and it did take awhile to find it. But, and it is a big but, traveling in circles I lost my way. Game designers did not provide me with a compass so I do not know how to get back to my ship.

Any suggestions besides walking around the whole planet or restarting the game.

If you're at the beginning stages of the game, then that's part of the tutorial. Just follow the game prompts and you'll be fine.

If you're past that, then you can call your ship to you. Just access the quick menu (X key) and you should find it. Or, there should be an icon (white with a black ship inside) marking its location. If this isn't showing, then I have to assume you're at the beginning stages of the game.

At game start the tutorial will ask you to install a scanner in your multitool, from that moment, once installed, you will be able to see your ship in the compass as a big icon.
Later, if your scanner is damaged you need to repair it, else you may not see your ship (among not being able to scan for items).

In the tutorial mission, once you've acquired the hermetic seal to repair your ship's engine, the game will prompt you to use your visor (F) to scan an item on the planet (e.g., a plant, animal, or mineral). Once you've done that, you should be able to find your ship's icon in your visor; it'll be a white hexagon with a black silhouette of a spaceship on it.
