This was posted on the Steam forum in regards to NMS. The actual science about the age of the universe starts about the 8:30 mark.
It has language. Also rant for the first few minutes, then just covering what most of us already know. Skip to the noted time I said above to find the actual science (8:30 mark). Or 7:30 if you want the background to the science set up that they go into.
Otherwise, absolutely fascinating.

If you don't want to watch, it basically hypothesizes that to have all the different species in as many star systems as you find them would mean a universe around 13.6 billion years, with the species themselves only taking a couple thousand years once they have the ability.
HOWEVER, due to the prevalence of materials like Plutonium, it indicates that the NMS universe is FAR older and hence probably closer to heat death instead.
Which could explain why the Sentinels are so guarded on materials as flagrant usages speeds up this proximity of that event.
