Preferences:
-Balanced and designed around combat.
-open-world/sandbox design, at least per chapter
-good, balanced selection of companions/henchmen
-Fair fights; no enemies that are immune to everything with no counters. Invulnerability phases with counters (WoW-style raid mechanics) are fine, permanent immunity to everything isn't.
-multiple solutions to most problems. Bonus points if there's an option to crawl through air ducts while listening to your companions complain that a tavern owner gave them lemon-lime instead of orange.
-Alternate paths around puzzles. A few puzzles are OK, however nothing too frustrating.
-Unfinished modules are OK.

Requirements:
-Leveling up to or near 40. Main reason is that the regular modules and expansions only go up to around 30 in practice, except if you repeat main quests for static experience rewards (and that's just lame)
-Removing the player's items/gold in any part of the module is prohibited, except if there's a convenient way to recover them.
-No nudity or similar types of obscenity. If you recommend "A Dance With Rogues" or "Bastard of Kosigan" here, expect a downvote.
First that comes to mind is Aielund. Finishes around Lvl 35ish depending on how often you expand your party with henchfolk and/or pets/summons and refrain from farming.

It's doesn't seem to contain the most challenging combat encounters (not IMO anyway) but they are adequate considering the focus on story and NPC interactions.
