And by "mods" I don't mean modules...I mean things like improving the graphics for the game, extra character creation options, more portraits then the default ones etc...

Basically I am looking for really anything besides modules...so if you know any great mods for nwn1 please do let me know.
I will actually second that. there is no single mod that gather all the improvement mods in one go. It would be nice with a step by step on NWN improvements.
I recommend taking a look at this sticky thread on the Bioware forums. It has a lot of good suggestions: Add-ons & Tips from the NWN Community

There is only one I really strongly recommend for the NWN1 official campaign and expansions- the Tony K AI. I only use the henchman enhancements from that package, rather than the monster AI- and it makes managing your henchmen so much easier. You can actually give them complex sets of instructions that they will follow.

Otherwise, there are lots of good suggestions in that thread, but whether you use them is a matter of taste.

Thank you for that above mod. It will certainly be quite nice! Now if only I could find a mod that improves the OC's and its expansions graphic wise I'd be set...not sure what to choose from that topic you listed...
Shadowlords/Dreamcatcher is a great campaign by Adam Miller.

Start with Shadowlords 1. And bring some friends. The campaign supports Co-op play and any NWN mod that can support MP Co-op is a lot more fun with a full party of PCs.
Try this thread. It has some of the best mods for NWN. I especially recommend A Dance with Rogues.

My bad. I thought you were looking for modules. Still, you should really try some if you haven't already. NWN isn't half a game without them.

Guys. he's not looking for modules, he's looking for game enhancement mods.

*edit* Bah! Didn't see your edit. Carry on, then.

From that list check out no.:

3 - to freely customize your character's looks in-game
12 - for Shader effects
14 - for tileset replacements (making the areas look a litle more like e.g. NWN2)
or 40 - alternatively, for a look more close to the original but with enhanced textures and a few different creature models
16 & 17 - for enhanced creature models
39 or 40 - for different GUI looks (there are more options, these are just my personal favorites)

Those are probably the most noticeable changes. The portrait selection is easy to enhance, just drop the according files in your "portraits" folder (or create one if there isn't one in the NWN directory). There are too many portraits and portrait packages to recommend any here though. Just do a Google or NWVault search and pick what you like.

Sadly, what I can't offer you is an overhaul of the OC's story-telling. IMO you'd really be better off looking for proper modules. ;)

Alternate combat animations

New combat animations in various styles, purely aestethic thing.

Barbarian style is my favorite, but many are great.
The overdrive thingy works with almost all modules.
