Are there any specific mods or "fan patches" I should install ahead of time to make the gameplay a more enjoyable experience?

There are AI mods and visual mods that make things a bit nicer, but the AI mods ruined the experience for me. Encounters started mixing and it made the whole feel wrong.
I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard raving reviews for this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/nwshader/
It makes all the graphics a bit prettier using modern post-processing techniques.

Oh, I should mention, in NWN1, the original campaign is for one character. The next two campaigns are for another character.
