Hi all, I'm currently working on a playthrough of Myst: Masterpiece Edition thanks to the kind gift of a GOG community member. I'm nearing the end from what I hear, but I just happened to look through the options menu. In there, among other options, I saw an option to enable "Zip Mode".

What is Zip Mode?

I enabled it but can't quite seem to figure out what it does. I know what the other options do, as they have clear effects, but I can't seem to figure out what Zip Mode does.

What is Zip Mode?
Hello JakobFel!

Zip Mode in both the original "Myst Masterpiece Edition" (with the still shots) and in "Riven the Sequel to Myst" is an option for (even) faster navigation.
When activated in the game's options menu it allows you to jump directly to visible location nodes in the distance, which you have visited already, without passing through (and loading) all individual nodes on the way.

However, it does not affect regular movement from node to node. Instead, it is only available for certain already known/visited locations and will occure when clicking on a destination on the screen, while the mouse cursor has changed from the normal hand icon to a yellow flash ("blitz") icon.

If I remember it correctly, in the original Myst there are not so many available locations. From what I remember it speeds up movement in its sequel Riven much more, because of the higher amount of nodes which are accessible.

If you enjoyed Myst, I definitely recommen you to try out Riven as well. It is a huge step up in almost all aspects!

Kind regards,

OH, that makes total sense, I'll have to try it out (even though I'm almost done with the game). I actually bought Riven on Steam a while back, since I heard most say that it's the best in the series and it definitely did feel like a step up.. I could figure out some of the puzzles on my own unlike the first game, where I definitely needed help from a guide haha. But I felt lost story-wise, so I decided to wait and play the first game first and just enjoy the story in order. Thanks for the answer! :)
