Having the same problem described by others. Launch, resolution change to 800x600 with spinning blue ring then, if I'm lucky, resolution changes back and Galaxy returns the Play button to clickable green again. Tried everything suggested by their "support" pages to no avail.

No responses yet? We're aware of this and working hard to fix it? Anything? Hello GOG?

Interestingly, I did finally receive a false positive from Sophos Home today - the first time since installing and trying to run this thing. Again, it's the "Generic S" - which basically means "I've found *something*, but I don't know what it is, and in fact I *don't even know if that's a virus*". It's a useless designation unfortunately, and it's the AV companies covering their behinds. It often happens with older games - because even though Myst IV has obviously received work recently to get it running on modern Windows, it will be still be "linking" some old code and libraries I'm sure. Until we have some kind of confirmation from either developers or AV suppliers, this false positive is just that.

Anyway, I created an exception for the Myst IV folder, and even ran with AV disabled - no change in behaviour. The only step I haven't tried, and I'm unwilling to do it for just 1 game out of hundreds - is uninstalling Sophos Home to see if it was still running while claiming it was disabled. GIven I have zero issues elsewhere, I'm more likely to ask for a refund on Myst IV. It's a shame, with all these celebrations of the 25th anniversary - and then seemingly nothing in terms of support. I would have hoped that GOG's support people would be monitoring this forum - given the "big re-release" - and picking up our thread here. I guess they aren't.
It seems to me if any of you want help from Support, then you are going to need to contact Support, directly and individually. You know, get in line.

This isn't a support forum from the the Support staff. It's just a game forum, with people who probably bought the game from GOG, and probably installed the game, and probably played the game, and probably liked the game. That's it.

In essence, you all are just standing around talking about what's wrong (for you, individually) and hoping someone will notice. And no matter how similar, you each might have subtly different resolutions to your circumstances.

I mean, you kind of gotta figure you all aren't the only ones who bought the game. Either it's working for most people, or GOG is a major scammer.

Check the support pages, the link is at the top of the webpage. It's the word "SUPPORT". That's a link. Click on that, and that leads to some info for troubleshooting, which is a sort of synonym for the word "support".

Follow through with the troubleshooting, even if you think you already have done that before having read it. Really. Take this seriously and don't act like you've know and already done everything that there is to do, and don't think that it's not worth trying again.

The support pages are basically the pre-recorded quick responses from Support, to get you and your systems set on the same solid foundation for further troubleshooting (if it turns out further troubleshooting is necessary). If you don't go through those suggestions on the support pages, then you are not ensuring that you've unanchored your system from common issues that get in the way.

And if you don't contact Support afterwards, then you aren't really interested in getting it to work with your system. You just want things to work themselves out on their own. Nothing wrong with that, I wish life did work like that. Well, sometimes. Except, for example, when computers try to be too helpful, then I wish it didn't work like that. Like those false positives from the so-called antivirus software being too helpful, in some cases. (Assuming the file was downloaded directly from an account at the GOG website and not some other website that claims the file it offers came from the GOG website.)

@thomq

I'm sorry that for some puzzling reason you feel aggrieved that people are discussing their inability to get their game to run here, and we are perfectly aware that this isn't a "support staff forum", but in my experience a vast number of game issues are resolved by the community themselves, ALL the issues I have ever had with games I have found solutions to just by searching these general forums as others who have experienced the problem have posted the solution they managed to either work out for themselves or found elsewhere on the internet. It is also helpful to discuss our issues on an open forum to ascertain avenues that have already been explored so that we do not waste hours of our time re-inventing the wheel on something, and can also find hints from other users that might spur us into a new line of investigating.

I am not saying going the official route isn't a positive direction to go, and I am sure many users are doing that, and I am also as sure that once a solution is found (providing it is a fix that can be implemented by the user rather than an update needed to the game files) they will post the solution here in the general discussion thread so that other users can benefit from it.

Please refrain from suggesting we're not serious about finding a solution to this problem, or that we have all suddenly pirated our software just because we're not progressing things in the same way you personally would.

After trying everything that GOG tech support asked me to do they have finally told me sorry, but to contact Cyan Worlds.

That is interesting…..

Mr Smug has arrived :) Neither The Support department(tm) or the SUPPORT PAGES(c) have anything to offer, unfortunately - other than the usual troubleshooting steps which achieve nothing here, as in many other cases. Copy paste bullet-points that are almost as obvious as the fact that you have a lot of spare time, and some deep-seated frustration that you just had to get out. I'm glad that in our own little way, we helped.

Something for you to bear in mind for future - discussing problems with games is a more constructive use of these forums, than patronising other users. If you can't see that your post is even less valuable than our own, I'd like to direct you to the Wiktionary page for the word "irony".

I guess it's off to Cyan we go... this could be interesting :)

Tell me, what is your objective here? To deliberatly annoy people? It has to be something close to that since I can't in my wildest fantasy imagine that someone writes something like you did to actually help? You won't come far by trying to make fools of people. *****!

lancegoodale: Just grabbed Myst IV and was excited to have the wife play these amazing games.
All the other games in the series work with no problems except for Myst IV
Game will launch and then the resolution changes and kicks me back to desktop

Tried verifying install files.
unistalled and reinstalled

Anyone else have this issue or a fix.

Thanks
I got mine to run finally. I had to put an exception into my antivirus to get it to stop identifying it as a virus. Then, I set it to run as an administrator, and Win10 then ran some kind of compatibility check which allowed it to run.

I hope that helps you out!

Good luck, and Happy Exploring!

the game runs a system check at first boot to see if you can handle things so yes antivirus systems get in the way of that so should be told to bugger off

you can run this test yourself from Myst4 \bin \configurator and look for myst_detection.exe

the game uses mp3 and vids so don't have those players running and two screens can also be an issue but it runs fine on my Asus W10h TP500l laptop
GOG Support advised:

1) Please make sure that you use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game (right-click on the shortcut or setup file and select "Run as Administrator"). If you are running the game via Galaxy, you can skip this step.

2) Please reinstall the game AND add it to your anti-virus/firewall software's exception/trusted list. Simply disabling firewall or AV software could not be enough, since some of these software are running still in background or in services list. If you are using Galaxy, then please add Galaxy as well.

3) Please make sure that DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is using its default setting. To do this, follow these steps:
I) Open Menu Start
II) Right click 'Computer' and click 'Properties'
III) Click 'Advanced system settings'
IV) Open tab 'Advanced' and click 'Settings' in 'Performance' section
V) Open tab 'Data Execution Prevention'
VI) Change DEP setting to the first option (Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only)
VII) Confirm with OK.

4) Please make sure that you have set proper permissions to read and write in the game installation folder. To do this follow this guide:

I did all this... the problem is still there as before, same symptoms.

Hmm. Never got this response from support. Will try this later. This is the most frustrating I have ever been with trying to get a game to run.

I've even been debating about buying a older computer I saw locally for $70 just to get this game to run.

Hey guys, if you still have problems to start Myst 4, you can give this a try:

https://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_episode_i_racer/common_problems_troubleshooting/post63

I know this workarround is for Star Wars EP1 Racer, but it is the same problem, at least for me.
Myst 4 crashs for me, too. If I disable this HID device, it runs without a problem. I know it is a lot of work, but maybe it works.
@Shinzon

That's it! I worked my way down disabling one HID at a time and when I got to the bottom one Myst now starts every time! I will feed this back to GOG in the hopes they can identify the problem and make a patch!

Live long and prosper!
