Not Solved!

Cannot save Riven, running Windows 7, same problems as other posters. Disabled UAC. Saving through the top menu or with control keys is not possible.

Has anyone figured out how to save?

The question posed by the OP in this thread was "How do i Save and Exit ?" or in other words "How do i reach the game menu ?". The question wasn't "I know how i'm supposed to save but i can't do it due to some problem i'm having with the game, how do i fix this ?".

You should start a new thread of your own for the save problem, since this thread it's not about the save problem with Riven and the main thread on the saving issues subject was mistakenly marked as 'Solved' by the OP. You should also contact gog support if you haven't done so already.

For all you folks not able to save try this...

Right click the game icon on your desktop or wherever it is and select properties then select compatibility. Run the program as either windows xp service pack 3 or an earlier version of windows. If that doesnt work. Right click again then select test compatibility and play around with the settings.

This worked! For me the "magic" version was xp service pack 2
RIght click on the icon that loads Riven.

then click properties

Under properties , click Compatability

then Click run as windows XP mode

apply

and then click ok

can save now by holding down alternate and F key, save as what every you like just pick a name . and click open to see the fiile you saved tell me if this works for windows 7

******************THIS SOLUTION WORKED FOR ME thank you***************************
I was never able make new saves, so I just copied the original savefile under different names in the folder, since I could overwrite games. Don't know if this helps, but just thought I'd put that in.
high rated
I actually started trying out function keys, and found that pressing "F5" brings up the menu to save/load, and allow you to switch certain options like Zip Mode on/off.
Did you notice, that you were replying to an over three year old post, which had already been solved? :-/
The thread itself is even more than seven years old!

And your solution is wrong for the posted questions.
The thread starter and the other persons in this thread had problems saving in the original versions of Riven.
In the last years, GOG switched the game to ScummVM. Therefore you can now press F5 and save very easily in a different way.

This was not possible with the original version which the thread starter used.

Why does that matter, though? The solution posted by orzene is actually the best solution now.

CarolJoy: Same thing in Myst?
Tried F5 and Ctrl F5 for Myst running windows 10. Not able to access save function.
Any new solutions out there?
I downloaded Myst in Windows 10 and cannot save it. I tried the F5 and Ctrl F5 option but they didn't work. Does anybody have any other solutions for windows 10?

having the same problem here. doesn't seem to be any way to open up a menu for saving/loading games etc. tried all combinations of ctrl + and alt +, only some ctrl+ options work (+u = mute, +d=debug, +z=exit game) but nothing works for saving games. pretty frustrating as it means you have to start over from the beginning every time

hey Martin3,

worked out what the problem is (for me anyway, could be similar for you). I am using a thinkpad which has special functions mapped for the f1-12 keys. What I did was to google 'key bindings' for my model, and just follow instructions to get rid of the key bindings for the f keys. Once that is done, using f5 in game worked fine for me. Hope this helps!

**edit -- alternatively, I can also use the 'Fn‘ key + f5 which works without having to remove key bindings. This might also work for you**
